Cinema has played a significant social and political role within Africa as well as shaping a construction of Africa beyond the continent.

There are some outstanding films that are must-sees for anyone interested in African history and culture (not in any particular order):

1) Mapantsula - A South African film produced during a turbulent time in its history. It was filmed at the height of conflict surrounding the fear of resistence to apartheid. Claiming to be making a simple "gangster" movie about South African youth, the filmmakers instead provide an insightful look into the turbulent live of a young, black South African man who takes an emotional journey into his own place in a racist society.

2) Lumumba - Directed দ্বারা renown filmmaker Raoul Peck, this film is a beautiful portrayal of the life and death of Patrice Lumumba, a young, dynamic leader who lead his country to independence, but whose life ended quickly and tragically.

3) Sometimes in April - A সাম্প্রতিক film দ্বারা Raoul Peck, this film provides a much আরো insightful and accurate depiction of the horrors of the Rwandan genocide than Hotel Rwanda.

4) Deluge - A documentary দ্বারা filmmaker Salem Mekuria, this film provides a very real, very personal story of the Dergue Regime in Ethiopia and the Red Terror that followed.

5) Yeelen - Director Souleymane Cissé uses a story about the battle between generations, between good and evil, and between the powerful and those at the whim of the powerful in order to মতামত on the corruption of power in Mali during the 1980s.
