She never said it to Riley. The writer's said Buffy was in love with Spike. And second of all, Spike didn't kill himself. He died so that he could make the world safe for Buffy. He went into that cave for Buffy. Angel gave them the amulet but they didn't know what it was going to do. They didn't know it would kill him, they didn't even know how it was going to help. It was never explained. And I'm sorry, but standing there and letting someone die when they didn't have to, that's upsetting. That's like letting your sister jump off a bridge and not try to stop it. Personally I think Spike's death is brilliantly done, I thought it was a great exit for a quality character and was actually a little bit gutted that it was cheapened slightly when they brought him back. Until AS5 was so good and Spike's a big part of that. Put it in perspective though. Buffy is 17yrs old when she has to take the decision to stab her boyfriend, her first love, that she hasn't 'seen' for months, through the heart in because 'it's her job'. Physically murdering someone that you love, or just anyone, regardless of your feelings for them, is better than letting someone die to save the world, someone who wants to do it?? I don't agree, and I think that had Buffy stopped Spike from sacrificing himself it would have been tragic - that was his redemption for everything that he'd done, and stopping him would have ruined that. And god the season 2 finale was just soooooo heartbreaking!!! I cried for about half an hour after that, seriously, it was awful. Whereas I didn't cry at all at Spike's death, I was far more cut up about Anya dying. And that's not through any dislike of the character, to the contrary, I like Spike, and so I thought it was a fitting, heroic end for him that redeemed him and was quite beautiful. Also very funny, because you can't have any important Spike moment without humour! "It stings a little"! Haha. But the other reason I picked killing Angel over Spike's death was it's effect on Buffy. Sacrificing Angel to save the world broke her heart and royally screwed her up, so much so that she was still recalling the pain of it years later, in both seasons 5 & 6. She loved him completely, had lost him at the moment when she they had given themselves totally to each other, and then had to fight the demon that wore his face to the death. Then, at the last minute, he is returned to her, as she has wished & hoped for for months, and then she has to kill him. It was so sad! And she was devastated by it, tried to give up her calling because of it. The effect on her was so much worse, because she had to lose the man she loved again, but more than that she had to physically kill him and see the look of pain and shock and betrayal in his eyes when she did. Come on, she loved both of these guys and first one she had to kill by her own hands due to save the world and the second one willingly decided to sacrifice himself and refused to get out of there with her, more than that, he rejected her ILY which she genuinly meant (Joss confirmed it, Buffy was in love with Spike). In my opinion, Spike and Buffy had a lot more development when it comes to their relationship. At first, Spike was just another vampire but as the seasons went on, he became a very important part of the show.
