I'm sorry, but this sounds awful. How hard is it to make a nice magical kingdom these days? Is this what passes for Princess Movies now?

If this doesn't encourage people to sign FaithinChrist's petition, I don't know what will.

Thanks for sharing the link, though. :)

I am also not satisfied with the trend established by Mattel, all of these modern stories with a claim on the magic ... but there is still hope that they improve. :)

I think it sounds pretty cool, but I do want the princess and fairy movies to make a come back.

Oh my goodness, this sounds terrible! No offense to those who disagree, but GOOD NIGHT- making this huge soap opera-love drama thing into a BARBIE MOVIE!?!?!? And then throwing in fairies, sparkle, and rainbows so the kids will not whine to their parents. Give me a break. Why don't we just animate Days of Our Lives and make the key character a fairy, stick a tiara on her head and say "this is what little girls are supposed to watch!"
And making Barbie really a fairy! Not acting in a movie, pretending to be a fairy, but REALLY a fairy. And all her friends are secretly fairies, too. PLEASE, MATTEL! I am considering-for the first time in my life- just pulling the plug on Barbie. This is the limit. Sassy mer-surfers and corny flairies who give sparkle to fashion.... that I can handle, I guess. But not this. I'm sorry to those of you who disagree; but if this is where they are going with Barbie, what hope is left? Even if they do go back to princesses, it will be warped and mangled.... a sad reminisce of what Barbie movies used to be.

Gloss Angeles... give me a break.

Well, after hearing they might be doing "Snow White and Rose Red" (a good, classic fairy tale) I've decided to give them one more chance.

Oh, and don't get me started on "Gloss Angeles". I miss Parthenia and all the other kingdoms like it... you know, the nice, interesting, fantasy kingdoms.

Well, I can't truly say that I might pull the plug on Barbie. I can't, and I won't. I will still watch her movies on youtube, and I will most likely still follow B current events. But seriously, now the movies aren't just heading to the ridiculous and modern stage, they are heading to the let's-make-a-little-kids-movie-into-a-soap-opera-and-make-a-lot-of-money-off-it stage. Now all the little girls will be running around getting into catfights because their best friend "stole their boyfriend". So much junk such as Hannah Montana (no offense to those who enjoy it) is aimed at 'tweens' which really means little kindergarten through fourth grade, and it's chock full of dating drama and the like. Little kids need fantasy, room for imagination, and encouragement to get out and play. Not go around fighting for your man and stealing boyfriends. And more than that, the older Barbie fans won't even be able to enjoy it because of its idiocy.

Ok, I have ranted on and on, and I hope I didn't offend anyone who is looking forward to this monstrosity. (sorry.) But if Mattel is going to keep turning out stuff like this, I think they're going to lose business. Because sooner or later, someone is bound to catch on.

I know exactly what you mean. I've been exactly the same way with most fandoms I've been involved with; it's hard to give up. But honestly, what is the need for all these romantic subplots? Even "The Barbie Diaries" doesn't put as much emphasis on it as this movie looks like it's going to (and even so, why does Ken have to be the guy involved? And why can't this be a Fairytopia movie? They got the romance RIGHT in those!). I couldn't agree more about what you said about little kids and fantasy - what's wrong with that? What's wrong with being allowed to imagine things other than dating?

Yes, I know the early movies had dating as well, but it wasn't all drama. "Nutcracker" was particularly good at this because it started with Clara and the Nutcracker as friends. There were no catfights or anything else that could come straight out of high school; their relationship developed naturally. Plus, the romance didn't get in the way of the movie; it was there, but it didn't detract from it. Those movies seemed to focus on particular interests (ballet, painting, singing, science) rather than romance, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Honestly, though, it's these uncreative new kingdoms that irritate me. Gloss Angeles, Oceana etc... Just bring back the fantasy, honestly.

In the earlier movies, the romance wasn't the whole thing. They weren't fighting or living or doing anything to date or have romance, the romance just happened. They just fell in love. They weren't all, "My boyfriends' best friend asked me out and so I'm gonna go out and then break up but then slug my bff for asking out my ex" and blah blah blah blah. And it really wasn't "Dating", it was more of the girl working alongside of the guy to defeat evil, and then falling in love with him in the process. And like you said, the romance was there, but it didn't detract. It wasn't the WHOLE concept.

And yes, the pathetic new kingdom names are just sad. They had originally planned to name Oceana "Atlantia" or "Atlantis" or something along those lines, but instead they opted for Oceana. Why, I don't know. Not only would "Atlantis" have been more creative, it would have introduced kids to the old stories, books and studies of the mythical Atlantis. But no, instead they chose just to take "Ocean" and add an -a onto the end of it.

Wait, they were going to call it Atlantis? Why on earth didn't they? Then they could've had one of those underwater kingdoms, all kinds of houses... that could've been awesome. Plus there's actually a nightclub in my town called Oceana, so that's probably another reason I can't take it serious.

For me, it's not just the names that are sad; it's the fact that it just has to be so modern, with no fantasy in it at all. In fact, I agree completely with this review:
"Arriving at Oceanna, all the mystique, all the grandeur that was in my children's imagination about Mermaids from the Fairytopia movies was instantly gone. Merliah arrives to a place that is supposedly under the rule of the evil Eris. But we see Merliah arrive to a world that seems to be nothing but shopping, makeup and 'pufferazzi'. The Destinies were the worst. Their voices were like nails on a chalkboard, and why on earth are these supposedly mystical psychic mermaids running a hair salon, worrying more about the evil Eris's split ends than the fact that they have an evil ruler who sends people to the dungeon for nothing... Oceanna was a land of shallow materialistic mermaids who didn't really seem to mind being under Eris's rule as long as they got to go shopping."
I don't want another kingdom like this.

I couldn't agree with you more about the romance; I always loved how it just developed naturally and didn't take over the girls' lives once it happened. For instance, in "Princess and the Pauper", Erika decides to make the most of being free, which she's wanted all her life, before marrying Dominic; and in "Three Musketeers", Corinne becomes a Musketeer (her own ambition) rather than jumping at the chance to date the prince. It doesn't need to be full of drama; and honestly, why would the target audience want to see these girls fighting over a guy? And why would Mattel think they WOULD, for that matter, seeing as how they've basically been trying to phase out Barbie and Ken's relationship for the past few years?

Yes, that review is my sentiments exactly.
Now, I liked the weddings and happy-ending-marriages at the end of the movies, but true love and finding the one you are going to spend the rest of your life with is a FAR CRY from dating for a while then breaking up and finding another man. And don't get me started on the Barbie-Ken relationship. If Ken were real he should sue Mattel. They have used him to make money and be a prop for Barbie as her boyfriend. Then they traded him in for a newer guy "Blaine" and kicked Ken to the recycle bins. Then when Blaine didn't take off like they'd hoped, Mattel sent him packing and brought Ken back in- but as a prop for Barbie, this time as a 'friend.' In the movies he began to take dumber roles, where he was the punch line of the jokes and had to wimpy so he could be rescued by his traitor girlfriend. And NOW he is to be brought back as her boyfriend ONCE AGAIN and be kidnapped--so that he can again be rescued by Barbie.
Of course I will never pull the plug on Barbie. But I'm not buying her movies until I feel like I'm getting my money's worth again. My collection will just have to be incomplete. I used to pre-order all the movies on amazon and devour all the videos released prior to the movie's release. I had a party the day I got the movie and I would have the friends who still love Barbie movies over to watch it. No more. And I hope I won't be the only one...so maybe, just maybe, Mattel will get the point.

Oh, and yes, they were going to call it Atlantis.

Emotions run high! lol
Well, I can say that I'm unhappy with the substitution of Ken at Blaine, and vice versa. Moreover, in the "Fashion Fairytale" Ken severs his relationship with Barbie! A famous in all world couple is at loggerheads! Mattel has gone mad.
I also miss the classic kingdoms as Parthenia, or the kingdom of prince Stephan, or the kingdom of Genevieve. Paris is good, but Gloss Angeles? Mattel mad twice.
And another thing: did earlier in the plot of the Barbie movie was written that she would takes away Ken from the other, not known earlier fairy-princess? I do not remember this. Mattel mad thrice.
Despite what I wrote above, I continue to wait "Fashion Fairytale", and "Fairy secret" (why this name? What kind of secret is it? In my fanfic with the same name have some sense in it). Waiting for your comments!

I agree; this whole thing with Ken is getting ridiculous. It's like he's only her boyfriend when it suits them. And despite the fact that I liked "Three Musketeers", I wish Ken's role had been better. What was wrong with his role in the older movies, where he didn't need to be rescued and was actually Barbie's equal? Eric, Julian and Carlos come to mind...

Honestly, Lorinna, don't get me started on the kingdoms. I loved Parthenia a bit too much and the others were great too.

I will give "Fashion Fairytale" a chance, but I'm still not too sure about this.

Yes, you're right. I can put in one row Rapunzel and Merliah, as princesses, don't knows about they title. But put in one row Dominik, who saved Erika, and Ken in this suit, so glam and sparkly, I can't.
On the question of kingdoms: I liked the kind of Corinne's farm, of Gascony, of Paris. I've seen another Paris, from the first frame of the trailer of "Fashion fairytale". This is a pretty town, full of fashion, intrigues and perfume Chanel No. 5. If I compare it with the real city of Paris, I can not do that.
And another thing: in the last time we don't see any wedding, but couples have seen a lot. Last, as I recall, was a wedding of Antonio and Rosella (honestly, I did not like a wedding dress of Ro). Prince Carlos talked about the wedding, but the new dress Mariposa wasn't wedding. Couples of Liana and Jeremy and Alexa and Ian are also classic- boys rescued girls, and not the opposite! The Christmas carol tells about the past, and Thumbelina, I think a little girl. I was counting on the wedding in The Three Musketeers, but instead, girls galloped into the sunset.
In Mermaid tale weren't there a male protagonist. Although a aspirant, a nice guy on the beach- Mattel released his doll! In "Fashion fairytale" and "Fairy secret" Mattel decided to fill all the time of relationship between Barbie and Ken. They don't even come up with new names for the main characters!
I think that Mattel has lost the magic secret, owing by which they created such masterpiece movies as The Nutcracker or The Princess and the Pauper.

So interesting read your opinions. Well, don't forget, that this link is link on upcoming Barbie movie, and not a discussion about difference between old and new Barbie movies!

Certainly, this is a link concerning an upcoming Barbie movie. But in talking about "Fairy Secret", we discuss what looks good about it and what doesn't.....and use past Barbie movies as examples.
Yes, the whole wimpy-Ken thing really irritates me. That's the main reason why I don't like Louis. I'm all for girl power, but do we have to make the guys look bad in order to make the girls look good? What's the difference in putting Corrine down because she's a girl, and making all the guys look like sappy, weak, puny idiots?
I much prefer the stronger male characters, where they were the equal of the female protagonist. And I miss the weddings...true love conquers all. :)
So, while I can see your point, pink_shine, I think this is an open discussion for comparing movies. After all, this site isn't about being correct and putting comments in their place, it's about fans discussing the stuff they're fans of.

faithinChrist, I agree with your all words. I know Margot well, so I can say that she is fighter for the truth.
Yes, I also miss weddings...In Three musketeers were hints on love between Corinne and Louis. But I want to better for Corinne, I don't like this crowned clown. I can't compare strong male protagonist Derek and Louis. Meh, Mattel thinks than he will be the king of France? I wouldn't see he as king.

Ok...I know I'm too old for Barbie but I WILL see this movie. Why? I read a summary of it and it says a fairy princess kidnaps Ken while he is going out with Barbie and said fairy wants to marry Ken! Sound familiar? Also, Raquelle and Barbie have been rivals but when the above happens, they team up to save Ken. Ok, here are my comparisons: Barbie: A Fairy Secret vs. Secret Fairy - hello! The title? Barbie: A Fairy Secret - Barbie vs. Secret Fairy - Becky. Barbie: A Fairy Secret - fairy princess wants to marry Ken vs Secret Fairy - Alyssa, the fairy princess in Secret Fairy, wants to marry Terence. Barbie: A Fairy Secret - fairy princess vs. Secret Fairy - Alyssa. Barbie: A Fairy Secret - Raquelle vs. Secret Fairy - Vidia. Barbie: A Fairy Secret - Ken vs. Secret Fairy - Terence. Barbie: A Fairy Secret - Barbie finds out her friends are secretly half-fairy vs. Secret Fairy - Becky's friends find out she's secretly half-fairy. Coincidences? I think not! When I see Barbie: A Fairy Secret, I will first write down either the similarities or the exact things that compare with Secret Fairy, then I will change those similarities or exact things in Secret Fairy. Or maybe even trash/delete/destroy Secret Fairy. So obviously Secret Fairy: A New Beginning would have to be trashed/deleted/ destroyed as well. I thought my book was an original idea. That is, until Barbie: A Fairy Secret came along. Go to FanFiction.net and search Secret Fairy by iluvhttyd1 and read it. it's not very long...see the similarities from both Secret Fairy and Barbie: A Secret Fairy
