Originally Genocider Syo was an imaginary friend Touko wrote stories about when she was at a very young age. Around the end of elementary school is were Touko start getting to be bullied because of her family’s situation and of her shy demeanor. As her books started to be published and gathering popularity, the bullying got worse enough to cause some damage to her eyesight (making her wear glasses) and for Syo to become a defense mechanism/Touko’s other personality.

Before The Tragedy, Celestia and Sonia were good friends because Celes would explain Japanese culture to Sonia, and in return the princess would chat with the gambler about the European culture.

The relationship between Junko and her classmates was strained before the mutual killings began. She was an enigma to them. She mostly hang around the back of the class with Mukuro. She was quite friendly and charismatic to everyone, but never really talks about herself, her past, or her career. Any info about her are only by the interviews in magazines/tv specials she appears in. Pushing questions about her will cause Junko to snap, which most people (aside from Mukuro) are left shocked.

Ishimaru and Ishida (real first name Daisuke) are twins, with Ishimaru being the younger twin. One night, they were walking home  until a group of street thugs attacked them. An unconscious Ishimaru was about to get hit in the head with a lead pipe until Daisuke protectively took the blow for him by shielding him.

When Ishimaru woke up in the hospital, he was devastated to find out his older brother had died. Daisuke’s death adds to the reason Ishimaru became SHSL Hall Monitor because he wants to get rid of school injustice and prevent history from repeating itself.

In the Despair Game, the reason Ishimaru looks like he did as “Ishida” (who isn’t the real one) is because he took his first deceased brother’s appearance. He also befriended Mondo because he saw a bit of Daisuke in him.

The only reason that Hagakure never snapped from constantly being called an imbecile and being accused of murder is because he’s high all the time.

Togami is bipolar and it causes him to act as cruel as he does, which he later beats himself up over. He wants to seek help for it, but doesn’t because he’s too ashamed.
