Also, because there's multiple versions of the story I see no reason why not have multiple versions of the same character in multiple parts of the universe

That is why all of the fairies are dead...or left before it got to far...mostly dead. You fairies are a stubborn bunch. At least the ones that were here were. Kept insisting they knew how to fix it...only to put so much effort and magic into it that many of them just kinda...went poof
