Yeah, it's annoying.
Even as a child, I casually told my overweight aunt: You look so much like Ursula.
My aunt is one of the nicest people I know but because I watched Disney, I related women that aren't conventional looking to be the villains or the frumpy sidekicks. Sure, everyone loves Belle and Esmeralda for being beauties that are also good hearted. Can't just being a good hearted female ever be enough? Why does beauty also have to be a requirement for Disney heroines?
Let's be honest, who would people prefer over all:
a gorgeous, good hearted character or a less attractive, good hearted character? It's such a sad reality. I don't mean to point fingers but a LOT of people who claim to like characters only for what's on the inside, just "coincidentally" happen to find that character the prettiest as well.

*Belle lovers*cough, cough*

I'm not saying this is true with all fanpop users, but it is true with a lot of them.

And another thing...consider this...
Who is truly the heroine of Sleeping Beauty?

Aurora or The Three Fairies?
The answer should be obvious to anyone with a brain.

It's the same thing that happens in real life. The fat, old, bald, ugly men expect pretty girls to fling themselves at them, and the girls are dumb enough to play along!

I'm tired of seeing every disney princess, or every disney heroine, made out to be gorgeous. Especially all of the kick-butt ones, like Esmeralda, Pocahontas, Jasmine, and Kida, are supposedly incredibly beautiful in their films, and their the ones who are undyingly heroic. Girls like Jane, Tiana, and Ariel, are only cute, (not portrayed to be absolute beauties) and they are of course, not kick butt damsels, they're NORMAL. Then the damsels in distress, of course, are all portrayed to be beauties as well. (Aurora, Snow White, Cinderella). The only exception I can think of is Mulan, but that's because she had to be a man for 3/4 of her film. Why can't the kick butt girl ever just be plain or cute? Why can't the normal girl ever be pretty? (exception is Belle, but she's kick-butt in terms of morals...falling for the Beast, being incredibly perfect in personality, etc, so she makes that point void.)

ON TOP OF THAT, these girls are always beautiful, and they always have either equally handsome or sometimes less-than-handsome men snagging them. Why can't a plain girl ever get a beautiful guy who loves her for who she is. Phoebus is not particularly attractive, but he gets Esmeralda, who's beautiful. And the first thing that interests him about her is her beauty. Even in HOND 2, Quasimodo gets the beautiful girl, which is ridiculous. They teach a whole lesson about inner beauty in the first film, and they give him a beautiful girl in the second film? What was the point?

even the beauty with the good heart who does normal things, instead of being kickbutt, (belle) is undyingly perfect in personality. She is! Some of you say she's not, but how? In the movie, she's made out to be perfect! She doesn't make any dire mistakes. The mistakes she does make are harmless and unintentional. I can only think of two "mistakes" she makes, and even those aren't really mistakes.

-Going into the West Wing- she had no idea touching the rose would harm the Beast, and by ignoring the beast was doing the RIGHT thing, because she was ignoring what the bad person (in her eyes) wanted her to do.

-showing the Beast in the mirror- only way to save her father.

Why not make a character JUST LIKE BELLE who's plain on the outside? You know if disney ever makes a plain princess, she's going to automatically be kick-butt, or she's going to be incredibly kind and passive, like Cinderella. but i'd prefer a more REALISTIC plain character, someone in between, like Belle or Ariel, or Tiana.

I don't know why this is such a problem for Disney. A world of parents complain about disney princesses always being beautiful. Don't get me wrong, I have my whole prettiness list of princesses, but it'd be nice to have a princess who was at the top of my favorites and at the bottom of my list of beauties.

It's painfully obvious how much Disney worships beauty in women. Let's take a look at their representations of females in the princess films.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Two females: Snow White and the Queen. Snow White is the prettier, more youthful one and thus is the heroine. Queen is the less attractive, older one and thus is the jealous villain we should despise.

Cinderella: Four females: Cinderella, Lady Tremaine, Anastasia and Drizella. Cinderella is the conventional beauty and thus she is a kind sweethearted person. Lady Tremaine is older and less attractive, thus she is jealous, spiteful, and cruel. Anastasia and Drizella are both flatchested, have uneven facial proportions, and massive feet, thus they are also antagonists because ugliness = jealousy in Disney films.

Sleeping Beauty: Four main females: Aurora who is extremely beautiful but does nothing, yet is the most popular character from the franchise because Disney knows that most little girls will adore her for the fact that she is gorgeous. And sweet which is a direct result of her gorgeousness by Disney standards. The three fairies are the true heroines of the film, brave and clever, yet they are rarely if ever seen in Disney merchandise because although they are very admirable, they are fat and old, two qualities that Disney usually tells us are negative traits in women.

The Little Mermaid: Two main females: Gee, I wonder who we're supposed to root for...the skinny, beautiful mermaid or the obese old hag? Do I even need to explain? Disney uses the appearances of characters to inform us of their inner traits? Beautiful, youthful Ariel = heroine. Fat, old woman = bitter villain. With Ursula, they put in a line where she says she's wasting away, which is a direct stab at overweight people by relating them to the villain.

Beauty and the Beast: Several females...Belle, the leading lady, who we are told several times is the most beautiful person in the film. WOW! The main girl is the most beautiful girl in the movie?!?!? Groundbreaking! There are those three bimbos who aren't important because they're cartoonier and not as pretty as Belle according to the villagers. Because they're not the prettiest in the land, they are shallow, just like the Queen from Snow White was. Beauty isn't even enough. You have to be the MOST beautiful. Mrs. Potts at least has a few fans...I guess...Anyway, young girls really admire Belle. The question is: Would they admire her quite as much if she weren't hot? I honestly doubt it. (Prepares for the denial of the Belle-azoids)

Aladdin: One main female: Jasmine, described as gorgeous several times. The other females we see are either hot bimbos or fat women we're meant to laugh at.

Pocahontas: Main female: Pocahontas. The artists clearly made Nakoma less attractive than her on purpose because God forbid a supporting character outshine the leading lady in the beauty department.

Mulan: Lead female: Mulan. Although many don't find her gorgeous, she is CLEARLY drawn more conventionally beautiful than the other girls we see at the beginning going to the Matchmaker. Also, the one problem the Matchmaker (who is fat and old, which as we know, is Disney lingo for "Not Nice") comments that Mulan is too skinny. As the Matchmaker is a jealous bitch, we are meant to love Mulan for who she is and thus learn to appreciate the fact that she's too skinny. It's doubtful there will ever be a Disney heroine who is too fat though. Too skinny = Okay. Too fat = Evil!

The Princess and the Frog: Main female: Tiana. The prettiest girl in her film. Oh how far Disney's come with their association with beauty and goodness since Snow White!

This is why I admire Pixar films a lot. Beauty is NEVER a priority in their films.
Can you think of a single Pixar film where beauty is the focus?

Up- the old man is the hero and the good person of the film, as well as chubby Russell. None are beautiful.

Wall-E- 2 ROBOTS are the hero, as well as a fat captain. None are beautiful.

Finding Nemo: Marlin and Dory are the heroes, both are fish, both are older (the human equivalent of in their 40's) and neither are beautiful/handsome.

Monster's Inc: 2 Monsters and 1 little girl are the hero. None are beautiful heroines, though Boo is undenyingly adorable.

Yet all these characters, despite their beauty, have become EXTREMELY popular, EXTREMELY well-selling, and EXTERMELY marketable! So what is Disney's problem with making a plain princess? It's not about marketability, or money so then, what is it!? Even the new princess, Rapunzel, is undenyingly cute, as well as being kickbutt. How creative and new, disney is really breaking down barriers, as per usual of the last 10 or so years.

But then, Pixar is often criticized for their lack of female protagonists. So even they have fallen in the trap of making human female characters beautiful, only they've done so by simply avoiding making female human protagonists at all.

The point of a cartoon is to look good and appealing to the eye. A beautiful princess is going to attract more viewers - let's face it.

All those films are circumstances where the characters aren't expected to be beautiful. People hear Disney Princess and think "dazzlingly beautiful women" straight off. A plain princess is just not going to be as popular as someone like Jasmine for example.

It would be nice for us average viewers to get an average princess getting the hot guy. Be all "At least in a fairy tale, we have hope!" XP (Speaking for myself here so no offense)
