I think Marilyn was a product of her times, but toward the end of her life she really fought to be taken seriously and wanted to play more substantial roles. And even in the "dumb blonde" movies Hollywood kept typecasting her in, her comedic timing was excellent. A lot of people forget that.

She was an avid reader and tried to make up for a lot she didn't know (she was a high school drop-out). She bravely battled the Studio System of Hollywood and fought to be something much more than what they wanted. I admire her for that. She missed out on feminism, and like Gloria Steinem said, it probably would have saved her life.

They say she turned down a lot of movie roles because all they wanted her to play was the 'dumb blonde' role, which she wasn't having.

She was definitely smarter and more aware than people give her credit for. They all see her as a stupid, heehee dumb blond girl. She also happened to be able to br a major sex symbol withot being a size negative two with huge boons and no brains. I'm a HUGE fan, personally, so I've pretty much made it my life mission to show people "the real Marilyn"
