Hogwarts Giant Squid Receives Execution Order

The Giant Squid, a huge, multi-tentacled creature that likes to bask in sunlight and tickle students, is a fond memory of many from their Hogwarts days. Many have spent their free afternoons lying down by the shores of the lake, sunbathing, studying and sharing the latest gossip, tossing pieces of bread to the Squid and never even dreaming that it could be a source of potential harm.
Until the day it was. On 6 January 2011, the Giant Squid reportedly grabbed one of the first-years engaging in a snowball-fight near the shores of the lake, Lottie McConner, and attempted to drag her under the surface. Luckily for young Miss McConner, though, Herbology Professor Neville Longbottom saw what happened and was able to rescue Miss McConner before she sustained any physical injuries. She was then escorted to the Hospital Wing by some of her classmates.
Upon hearing what happened, the Ministry of Magic Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures summoned the Squid’s advocate to a hearing conducted at the Ministry. No matter how much Professor Longbottom, the Squid’s chosen advocate, insisted that the Squid was generally harmless and must have been PMSing at the time of the ‘attack’ (this small attempt at humour did not go down well with the Wizengamot), the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures decided that the Squid, quite possibly going senile in its old days, has become a danger to the school, and sentenced it to death by beheading.
The execution date is tentatively set for 4 March, a Friday, and Professor Longbottom is currently busy organising a funeral for the following Saturday, saying “The Squid has been an integral part of Hogwarts ever since before my generation was born. Its death will be treated as a tragedy, not the freak show the Ministry will undoubtedly try to turn it into.”
