The only ones I've ever seen call Ginny a Mary Sue are some of the Harmonians. I think they do it as a defense mechanism.

I can definitely see how she would be considered one. I mean, she's the prettiest girl in her year, dates EVERYONE and Harry just happens to fall for her. I mean, kinda predictable and Mary-Sue-ish.

@boolander--Could you please provide the page number of the HBP which states she was the prettiest girl in her year? Also, the only guys I remember her having dated Michael Corner and Dean Thomas, but I don't remember her dating Neville Longbottom (I don't count the Yule Ball), Seamus Finnegan, Draco Malfoy, Vincent Crabbe, Gregory Goyle, Ernie Macmillan, Blaise Zabini, Colin Creevey, Cormac MacLaggen, and Marcus Belby.

And a Mary-Sue is supposed to be the writer living herself through the character. JKR is nothing like Ginny...

I don't see it. I thought Mary Sues were perfect in every way or something like that. She is talented, yes, but can have a hot head like her brother.

I get why some people would think she's flawless, but I'm willing to bet those people aren't hardcore Harry Potter fans. Yes, Ginny's maybe more Mary-Sueish (in the flawless category) than, say, Hermione or Luna, but she definitely has flaws. You just have to read carefully enough to look for them. Like hrrypttrfn328 just said, she has quite a temper (which sort of fits Harry, but that's not the point here). She also kissed Harry after he had broken up with her, which is sweet and I get why it happened and it's not like Harry was exactly refusing, but putting herself out there like that and trying to win him back before he went off on his Horcrux hunt is sort of selfish. I'm not saying she's selfish, I'm just saying she has selfish *moments*. So yes, I see why some people would think she's too perfect, but if you read carefully enough, she has flaws. Real ones, not clumsiness.

I guess I can see how some people might think that, but like souflizzle317 said, I doubt they're big fans of the series. If you are, I think you would have noticed that she does have some flaws. Honestly, Ginny is one of the last people I would have called a Mary-Sue. I think she's a stronger character than that.

I think she's got a few Mary-Sue tendencies, but overall she's not a complete Mary-Sue like Bella or Renesmee. She's still got individual qualities and she's not supposedly "average" or anything.

^ Mary Sue isn't one person. It's a name applied to characters in stories etc who are perfect in every respect, or are a self-insert of the author.

I voted "no, but..." route. Too many people use Mary Sue sterotypes to type class a character. Like Orihime from Bleach. Since she's got these amazing powers, she must be a Sue. A Mary Sue is a charactet that for some reason is simply not believable. I think a LOT of the reason why people call her a Mary Sue is because they feel she was just there to be a romantic interest for HP.

Mary-Sue: a fictional character with overly idealized and hackneyed mannerisms, lacking noteworthy flaws, and primarily functioning as a wish-fulfillment fantasy for the author or reader. Perhaps the single underlying feature of all characters described as "Mary Sues" is that they are too ostentatious for the audience's taste, or that the author seems to favor the character too highly. The author may seem to push how exceptional and wonderful the "Mary Sue" character is on his or her audience, sometimes leading the audience to dislike or even resent the character fairly quickly; such a character could be described as an "author's pet".

^Now this suits Bella, Edward, and Renesmee very well. Now, Ginny, not really in my opinion.
