He has Stu-ish qualities that you could argue make him into a Gary-Stu. I just think his flaws outweigh the Stu-ness.

Not really. The only thing that could really make him a Gary-Stu is him being the hero of the story, which doesn't really count. Harry is unique and he has flaws. He makes plenty of mistakes. And even though he is good inside, he has some negative personality traits, such as his temper and stubborness.

Actually Harry does get a pretty high score at the Mary Sue- litmus tests. It's because he is special even among other special characters. His character is just less idealised as Edward's and he has flaws because JKR is an amazing author.

I love Harry and I think that in order for the story to work he couldn't be any different, but it is true that he is a little too much of a center of an attention to not be a Gary Stu.

Not even a little bit... Harry makes a lot of mistakes, he is thrust upon a role he is not comfortable with, he sometimes doesn't know best, he gets mad, he gets frustrated, he loves, he hates, he breaks the rules, he isolates himself. Harry makes many mistakes, naturally, because he is just a boy, growing up, who has been given more than he can bargain. He can't help but get frustated sometimes, he can't help but think he has to do everything alone, he can't help but get mad... But he also grows up, he matures, he realizes he makes mistakes, he asks for forgiveness. He does his best with what he has been given, and this is exactly the reason HP is so popular, because the main character, being a wizard and having this impossible task of being in the middle of the ultimate good vs. evil fight, he is still just a human being, just a boy growing up, maturing, becoming an adult. He's not perfect but he looks out for the people he loves, he makes mistakes but he tries to fix them. He asks for forgiveness and forgives others. He is scared but he is brave.

Harry has a little bit of everything and one thing he is DEFINITELY not, is a Gary-Stu. Being a Gary-Stu implies being one of those perfect characters, that has no flaws in the writers' eyes, that can do no wrong, the person who is always the victim, and everything happens to him.

This is not Harry's case at all, and everyone who reads HP should agree with me. Harry is just a normal human beings, with flaws as I have mentioned before. Trying to do his best - and not always succeeding - with the life he has been given, in the middle of a war. Being the protagonist of the story doesn't make him a Gary-Stu. On the contrary, being the amazingly written, ultimate boy becomes grown up character makes him one of the best fictional characters in my opinion.

^ I'm sorry, but I have to say one thing...
-But everything DOES happen to him
-He gets all "oh woe that is me!" a lot (though most of the time I can't blame him, but he does get guilty and angsty way too much)
-He gets a happy ending (I know he deserves it, but the ending seemed too good to be true. Most HP fans would agree with me on this)
-One of human kind's biggest flaws is selfishness, and for the most part he doesn't have any...something that doesn't make any sense since EVERYONE has selfishness inside them
...That's all I can think of right now (BTW I'm not arguing for the fact that he is one, it's just I want to show you WHY I and others think that Harry is one at first glance)
Honestly, I agree with bri-marie, GD and cassie: that he seems one at first, but his flaws outweigh his Stu-ness

His popularity and special characteristics was both a bane and a boon for him.

Sort of...not intensively, completely and abnormally like Bella, but yes, he had some Stuiness in him.

well, he is the center of the story.

Has a self-depreciating sense of humor
never listens to anyones advice when it really matters
never asks questions (he was raised to NEVER ask)
pretty terrible with the ladies

hes gotta have a lot of attention on him thats part of story. hes very flawed... like others have said before me.
