I chose them mostly due to the fact that it is easier to get away from physical abuse compared to the kind of abuse the Dursley's gave Dudley. I agree with what Dumbledore said of their mistreatment of their child, by spoiling him rotten. It can cause much more lasting damage, since it is something that effects your everyday life, and you may not even know it until it comes up. And the fact the Vernon and Petunia were doing it out of love almost makes it worse in it's irony.
