1. Aside from Voldemort and Malfoy, the Dursley family were Harry Potter’s worst enemies in the series.
They locked him in a cupboard for most of his life, treated him like a servant, and generally tormented him his entire childhood.
2. Which is why Harry was so excited to get his Hogwarts letter and book it out of 4 Privet Drive.
3. But one Reddit user named jodatoufin recently highlighted a pretty convincing theory as to why the Dursleys treated Harry like garbage.
4. Remember how Voldemort accidentally turned part of Harry into a Horcrux?
5. And how constantly being around the dark magic of a Horcrux makes you act like a mean-spirited, evil, and generally miserable person?
6. Well, that might be the reason behind all the Dursleys’ terrible behavior: They were negatively affected in the presence of a Horcrux aka Harry Potter.
7. Here’s the theory in full, according to ChristieIsBored (who also links to this fascinating Tumblr post):
8. In sum, to quote jodatoufin, “Since Harry was kind of a Horcrux that could explain why the Dursleys were so cruel to him.”
9. Maybe it wasn’t the Durselys’ fault they were so awful after all.
10. Well that would certainly explain some things.

Another theory is that they were actually, in a warped way, trying to protect him. In the first book Vernon states that they tried to "squish the magic out of him" through how they treated him (I think it's in the chapter where Harry meets Hagrid and learns he's a wizard). Maybe they (or Petunia at least) thought Harry would be safer if they could somehow subdue his magic and keep him out of the magical world.
