Chapter 7
After a good cry, I feel a little better. I decide to take a shower. The feeling of warm water on my face and body calms my frazzled nerves and allows me to block out all the painful thoughts that have been running through my head. It feels good to not think for a little while.
The sound of my cell phone beeping on the bathroom countertop brings me back to reality. I shut the water off, take the towel from the rack, and মোড়ানো it around myself. When I pick up the phone, I see that I’ve received three text messages. The first one is from my brother Ben who tells me that he’s নিরাপদ and sound at home. The সেকেন্ড one is from my agent who wants to arrange a meeting with me to discuss a possible movie project. When I open the third text, it says, “Sorry. I was an ass. Hope ur ok.” It’s from Josh.
I text back, “Can I see you?” He quickly responds, “Sure. At home.”
I look at myself in the mirror and frown. My eyes are puffy and have dark circles under them. I try to put myself together as quickly as I can. I pull my hair back and put on a pair of jeans, a t-shirt, and a jacket. With all the damage I’ve caused in the last 24 hours, I decide it’s better to try to smooth things over with Josh sooner rather than later.
When I walk out the door, I notice that it is starting to rain so I pull the ঘোমটা of my জ্যাকেট over my head and run to the car. I jump in and drive to his place as fast as I can. When I finally get there, I park the car on the রাস্তা and turn off the motor.
The রাস্তা is quiet. The wind is blowing the trees around and I can see people rushing down the রাস্তা to avoid the rain. Suddenly, this panic-stricken feeling overcomes me. I try to gather my thoughts and think of what I’m going to say but I can’t focus. I decide to get out of the car but my feet can’t seem to সরানো forward. I can feel the rain beginning to drench my clothes but I still can’t get myself to move. I see people looking at me as they walk দ্বারা under their umbrellas অথবা through the windows of their cars as they drive by. They’re probably wondering why I’m just standing there in the rain.
An elderly couple stops and asks me if I’m okay. I nod and thank them for their concern. A few সেকেন্ড later, I see someone running toward me out of the corner of my eye. He’s wearing a pair of jeans and a hooded jacket. When I turn to face him, I catch my breath when I realize who it is.
“Jesus Jenn, what are আপনি standing out here in the rain for?” Josh asks. “You’re soaking wet.” I look at him and say, “I’m fine.” Josh looks worried and says, “Let’s go inside.” He puts his arm around my waist and guides me toward his front door.”
When we get inside, he motions me over the পালঙ্ক then disappears into his bedroom. A few মিনিট later, he comes out with a towel, shirt, and a pair of shorts. He hands them to me and says, “Put these on. আপনি can change in my room. I’ll make some coffee.”
When I come out, he hands me a mug filled with coffee and says, “I know it’s not স্টারবাক্স্ but it’s not bad. Do আপনি want some cream and sugar?” I nod, add the দুধ and sugar to my coffee, then take a sip. I close my eyes and feel the warmth of the beverage trickle down from my head to my toes. When I open my eyes, I see him staring at me intently.
Where do I begin, I think to myself. I have no idea what to say. Luckily, a four-legged friend bounds up to me at that moment and makes himself at প্রথমপাতা in my lap. I smile and pat him gently. He rewards me দ্বারা turning over for a belly rub.
“Driver likes you,” he says. I reply, “Well that’s nice to hear. I like him too.”
I look at Josh and say, “What are আপনি doing at home?” I add, “I would’ve thought an eligible bachelor like আপনি would be out on a hot date.”
He laughs and says, “You’d think that wouldn’t you.” He pauses a moment then says, “Believe me I’ve been on a few dates but things just never seem to work out.”
“Why is that?” I ask. He replies, “Because they’re not you.”
Josh sits on the পালঙ্ক পরবর্তি to Driver, takes a sip from his coffee mug, and looks toward the TV that is not on.
I break the silence and say, “Maybe this was a mistake. Maybe I should go.” Josh turns to me and and says, “Why are আপনি here? Won’t he be wondering where আপনি are?”
I quietly say, “He’s gone.”
“What happened?” he asks then quickly says, “Never mind. It’s none of my business.”
I look at him and say, “I had to make a choice. I chose you.”
He leans toward me and says, “Are আপনি sure?” I answer his প্রশ্ন with a kiss.
