Henry John Deutschendorf , Jr was born in Roswell, New Mexico on Dec. 31, 1943 to mother Erma Louise Swipe and father Lt. Col. Henry John Deutschendorf Sr.
He adopted the surname Denver when Randy Sparks, a church leader, suggested that 'Deutschendorf' wouldn't fit comfortably in a marquee.
Denver attended Texas Tech বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় in Lubbock and sang in the "Alpine Trio" while pursuing his architectural studies. Denver dropped out of TTU in 1963 and joined miscellaneous bands.
John abandoned band life to go into a solo career. He released his first album, Rhymes and Reasons, in 1969.
