'NCIS': Wilmer Valderrama joins cast as series regular

This fall, Wilmer Valderrama joins the cast of

as a series regular, but the actor swears he’s not there to replace beloved agent Anthony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), who bid farewell to the series at the end of last season after 13 years.

“[Weatherly] had a fantastic journey with the show. The truth is there’s no shoes to fill, I’m definitely wearing my own,” the

alum said at the EW lounge during San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday. “I’m excited because as a new member of NCIS I get to bring a new energy to it, a different dynamic.”

Valderrama’s character was described as a “loose cannon” when he was announced as an

cast member, and the 36-year-old actor says that’s true to form thus far.

“We’re at day five of shooting on the first episode. Already there’s been a couple of explosions and I shot a guy off of a motorcycle already,” he said, adding: “I am crazy.”

Valderrama plays a field agent who disappeared while embarking on a deep cover assignment years ago – leading many to believe him dead.
