'Broken Summary:'

'Once Upon a Time' Recap: Season 2, Episode 1: 'Broken'
BY: Shannon Keirnan POSTED: SEPTEMBER 30, 2012 @ 6:35 PM PST

Jefferson goes back across town to his apartment. It is raining, but he can’t close the window. Sighing, he rests his head in defeat. A white dove flutters onto the ledge, strutting about for a moment as Jefferson watches in surprise. It flies off, and he notices a postcard from Storybrooke. On the back it says one word, “Broken.”

Back in the world of magic, two horses are riding through the desert toward a tall castle. A handsome prince chops through thicket, reaching a princess asleep on a slab.

“If this works we don’t tell her everything—not right away,” he says to his masked companion. He kisses the princess—Sleeping Beauty—and she wakes up, amazed to see her prince, Phillip. Even more surprising, however, it that the kingdom seems to be empty, and has fallen in disarray around her, but Phillip tries to distract her from that.

Back in Storybrooke, The purple fog is lifting around Snow and Charming. They decide to find out what’s happening. People on the street are still regaining their memories, celebrating and hugging Snow and James. Snow is reunited with her dwarves. It appears the curse is broken. No one is quite sure how to proceed, except Snow White. Her first determination is to find her daughter.

Easily done, because Emma is standing behind her.

“So it’s true,” she says in shock. The hug and Snow cries, “You found us.”

James hugs his daughter as well, and Henry hesitantly calls him “Grandpa,” which amuses everyone.

But no one seems to know why they are still there, if the curse has been lifted. The Blue Fairy comes up, and Henry encourages her to send everyone back, but with no wand or dust, she says matters are complicated now.

Meanwhile, a strange couple is being reunited—the wild-haired girl from the asylum and, shockingly, Mr. Gold share a moment. Belle explains that she was abducted by Regina and kept in the asylum for 28 years. Mr. Gold takes her to a wishing well, dropping down his evil concoction that brings the purple fog. Belle insists that he mustn’t give into his hate and take revenge. She makes him promise, so they can be together. He promises, and they kiss.

Snow White and the rest of the crowd are walking down the street. Emma is on a mission, but Snow wants to know what questions she has for her and James that she can answer. Emma just needs time, she says. A crowd behind them causes a commotion, running through the streets, and Archie hurries up. He tells them everyone is heading off to kill Regina.

Henry is insistent that they not let that happen to his mother. While James seems less inclined to care, he admits that if she has her powers back, the crowd is marching into a slaughter, so they chase off after them.

In the desert castle, Sleeping Beauty and her Prince are reuniting tenderly, while the masked figure wanders off. It touches a stone on the ground, which is shaking. The ground bursts open, and a cloaked black figure with red eyes bursts from the ground, blowing the companion off. The prince swipes at it with his sword, severing a gold locket with a strange design.

Mr. Gold goes to his shop, telling Belle to wait while he finds her something to wear. He opens his safe and pulls out a strange gold box with the evil figure’s locket within.

The crowd surrounds Regina’s house, and she gears up to attack them, but nothing happens. The crowd, who has shrunk away, stands tall, muttering—Regina has no magic. Snow, James, and Emma rush in, trying to calm people down. Will, the doctor, insists that James is not his prince, but won’t tell him who he is. Snow White suggests they lock Regina up, for her and everyone else’ safety.

They put Regina in the jail, and ask why they haven’t returned home. Regina tells them there is nothing to go back to—their land is gone. When they leave, she attempts to magic open the lock, but nothing happens. Mr. Gold enters, telling her that magic is different here. He confronts her about Belle, saying that she kept her alive so she could kill her when it suited her. He grabs her arm through the bars and imprints her hand with the gold locket.

“The one thing no one can escape: destiny.”

Back in the destroyed land, the companion, who has taken off her mask and revealed herself as a pretty girl—Mulan—explains what the creature is. It is a wraith, a Soul Sucker. It marks its victims with that locket and then removes their souls, damning them.

Prince Phillip, comforting Mulan, notices the mark in his hand, but hides it from Sleeping Beauty (Aurora).

In Storybrooke, Mr. Gold drops the locket on the forest floor, using an inscribed dagger to summon the wraith. Back in the jail, Regina sits up with a gasp, the mark on her hand flaring red and angry.

On the street, Snow White is still eager to talk to Emma as mother and daughter, not just as friends, as they have been. Snow White is glad they’re together finally, but can’t help but feel that Emma isn’t happy about it. And she isn’t. Emma only knows her parents sent her away. While Snow insists that she would have been cursed too, had she stayed, Emma says at least they would have been together. Which curse was worse?

In the forest, the prince, Aurora and Mulan are setting up camp during the day. Mulan explains that the wraith only appears when light is absent. The prince erects a lean-to, and presses Aurora to sleep, but she won’t. The prince says he must leave to get wood, looking increasingly upset. He kisses Aurora lingeringly, and she asks, “That’s a see you in five minutes kiss?”

He reminds her that he loves her, and as he walks away, a tear escapes, but Aurora does not notice.

In Storybrooke, Snow, James, and Emma confront Mr. Gold, who doesn’t seem especially concerned about anything.

“Maybe I don’t need to know the answers maybe I just need to punch you in the face,” Emma threatens. Outside, with a bang, a storm starts. Lights flicker, the ground shakes, and wind blows. That, Gold says, is his gift. It will take care of Regina.

“We’re not done,” Emma tells Gold. He says he knows—she still owes him a favor.

After they leave, Belle comes in from the back, wounded that he has lied to her. He insists that he did not lie; he is not the one killing Regina. The wraith is. They exchange words, and sobbing, she leaves, despite Gold calling apologies after her.

Mulan is making a fire. She and Aurora hear some strange noises in the woods, and Aurora stumbles up, asking where Phillip is. Mulan notices that the horses are gone—Phillip has left. Mulan decides to go after him, determined that he won’t sacrifice himself for the princess and Aurora tries to follow, but she is left behind.

In Storybrooke, the wraith blows down the door of the jail and attacks Regina, sucking light from her face with a long hand. James appears, distracting him, and they tussle over Regina. It resumes its attack, but Snow uses a lighter and hairspray, sending the wraith escaping through the window. Regina insists it will come back until she is dead, and it can’t be killed. James thinks they should just let it take her and leave—problem solved. But Emma has made a promise to Henry to protect his mother.

They go back to Regina’s office, and Regina asks if Henry really asked Emma to protect her, touched. She pulls out the one thing that will help—Jefferson’s hat. Regina explains that it will open a portal to their old world. Since it no longer exists they are basically banishing it to oblivion. Regina tries to activate the hat as the lights go down and the doors swing open.

The wraith busts in, and James and Snow try to distract it with fire while Regina fusses with the hat, which doesn’t seem to be doing much more than being a hat.

Aurora shows up, having found a horse and catching up with Mulan. Mulan seems to resent her for the love Phillip has for her, and the length he will go for her. Aurora realizes that Mulan loves him, but Mulan denies it. They find Phillip awaiting the wraith, as Mulan and Aurora ride up. Mulan tries to take the sacrifice, but he won’t allow it.

“I love you,” he says over his shoulder. It is unclear to which woman he is speaking. The wraith attacks, and despite their efforts, it kills Phillip.

Regina is still struggling with the hat. Emma touches Regina’s arm, and suddenly the hat beings to whirl into a purple portal, sucking down the wraith. However it grabs Emma, bringing her with it. Snow, horrified, yells that she won’t leave her again, and jumps in after her. James tries to follow, but the portal closes too soon, leaving him behind.

James and Regina are in shock. James is furious, but Regina doesn’t know where they are, and if they’re dead or not. They fight, and she throws him with a surge of power. The trees on the wall come alive and their branches hang onto him. Henry comes in just as she is about to kill him. The trees release James as Regina explains to Henry that Emma and Snow have gone through the portal, and apologizes.

“You really are the evil queen,” Henry says. She insists that she loves him, but he tells her that she has to prove it by getting them back.

Back at Mr. Gold’s, he is spinning yarn when Belle comes back in. She is touched that he still has her chipped cup. He tells her it is the only thing in the shop that he cherishes. “And now you must leave, you must leave because despite what you hope, I am still a monster,” he tells her. Belle says that’s exactly the reason she must stay.

At Snow’s house, James insists to Henry that they are alive, and he will find them.

Back in the castle, Aurora and Mulan lay Phillip out on the slab where Sleeping Beauty had once slept. Mulan ties the locket into a small bag and gives it to Aurora. Mulan tells Aurora about the curse cast by Regina that ripped everyone away from the world. Something in that corner of that land saved them. They were frozen for 28 years, but then the curse weakened, and Mulan and Phillip were free to set off looking for Aurora. She tells Aurora that some have survived, and remain in a safe haven, where they must go.

There are noises, and Mulan wades through the mess that the wraith brought. Aurora asks what it is, and Mulan, angrily, says that it is what brought the wraith and killed their prince.

Unconscious in the debris lay Emma and Snow....

In the Enchanted Forest

At a camp site in the hours before they prepare to hide out from King George (Alan Dale) and seek refuge at his mother's home, Snow White, Prince Charming and Red Riding Hood all split up after a enemy approached them. The enemy turns out to be Sir Lancelot (Sinqua Walls), who then captures Snow and brings her back to face King George. At the palace, the King tells Snow that James failed him because he wanted him to be the son that he always longed to have and now wants James to feel his pain. That is when the king tells Snow that the water that he offered her was actually a curse to prevent her from ever having children. Moments later, and after being dropped out of a carriage, Snow hears someone on horseback, so she takes a stick and knock Sir Lancelot off. However, it turns out that Lancelot wants to help Snow reach James and his mother Ruth before King George's men get to them. By the time they reach the farm, Snow and Lancelot discover that they are too late, as James had to already fend off the King's men, only to see one of them aim a poison arrow at Ruth. After she is hit, she gives Snow a medallion she got from a gypsy that will predict the baby's sex of her baby, even though Snow is upset because of what the King did to her. Ruth then tells her the water of Lake Nostic is their only chance to break the curse for both women.
As the group arrived to Lake Nostic, they discover that the lake is now dry. That is when Charming realized that after having killied the Siren to free Frederick resulted in the water to disappear. But Lancelot believes that there has to be some water left in the area, and he finds it in a very wet snail, but only one person can drink it. Snow reluctantly turns down the offer, so James gives it to Ruth, but it does not work. Knowing it is too late to look for another way to save her, Ruth makes one request, and thats to see James and Snow marry. Snow then asks Lancelot to honor that request, and Snow and James are married before Ruth passes away. Charming then gives Snow the medallion, which all of a sudden starts moving. It turns out that Lancelot put the water in Snow's chalice and that Ruth never took a drink of it, which broke the King's curse. Charming vows that they will take the kingdom, this time as a family.

In Storybrooke

As David attempts to find a way to use the hat to bring back Mary Margaret and Emma, Henry insists on helping, but David, who says that he'll find magic (and hopefully Jefferson), wants Henry to concetrate on going to school while he takes care of this situation. But Henry, as usuual, does the opposite and goes to see Jefferson anyway. When Henry sees Jefferson at a park bench, he asks for help but Jefferson say no to that request but not before telling Henry about Regina's vault at the cemetary. Henry knows that his daughter Grace/Paige has been looking for him, but Jefferson is afraid to face her because she will be mad for abandoning her. Henry thinks that Jefferson should go see her anyway. After that conversation, Henry calls Regina at her Mayor's office (she was asked to vacate the premises) to ask her to meet at Granny's Diner, not knowing it was a distraction to sneak into the office to get the keys so he can sneak into the cemetary.
Henry later arrives at the tomb at succeeds in sneaking into the secret chamber where Regina kept the hearts stored. When he hears one of the boxes beating, Henry opens it and sees a snake crawl out. Luckly, David showed up to stop his grandson from going any further, as he was tipped off by Regina about the missing keys and being stood up at the diner. David tells Henry that they will find a way to get Emma and Mary Margaret back together. Later that day, Jefferson is finally reunited with his daughter Grace and watching this from a distance is a excited Henry, who is joined by David, who buys a pair of swords to teach Henry how to defend themeselves. However, they are also watched from a distance by King George/Albert Spencer.

In the Fairytale World

Inside the pit, Emma comes face to face with Cora (Barbara Hershey), who wants to talk to her. Emma learns that Cora is Regina's mother, who explains to Emma that she lost her powers the moment Regina turned on her. At that same time, Snow White/Mary Margaret, who just woke up and sees the two talking, stops the conversation and tries to tell Emma that Cora can not be trusted because is just as evil as Regina. Emma, however, believes Cora might be telling the truth. Emma and Mary Margaret are later released from the pit and meets Sir Lancelot, who come out of the hut and tells Snow/Mary Margaret that he would never have locked her away if he knew it was her. Meanwhile, Mulan (Jamie Chung) warns Princess Aurora (Sarah Bolger), who hid a dagger inside her dress, to be careful after she sees Lancelot embracing Snow. Hours later, after Lancelot brings food to Emma and Mary Margaret, Lancelot tells Snow/Mary Margaret about what happened when the curse was broken. She wants Lancelot to help her find a portal but Lancelot tells her that the ogres are out there and it would be dangerous to venture outside the island. This gives Snow/Mary Margaret the idea as to where to find one without Cora finding out. So Snow/Mary Margaret begs Lancelot to let her go, on the condition that she brings Mulan, who arrives with weapons for the trip, and gives Emma's gun back to her. Later that night at a camping site and just as Mulan and Snow search for water, the confrontation between the women starts to escalate when Mary Margaret is jumped by Aurora, which is broken up by Emma and her gun. Unfortunately, the gunshots also woke up one of the ogres, who then catches Emma and pins her to ground, only to be shot in the eye by Snow/Mary Margaret's arrow.
At the former palace of Snow White and Prince Charming, the four ladies arrive, where they proceed to the wardrobe room and finds the tree there. But just as they were about to make it work, Lancelot shows up at the last minute, claiming to help get Snow and Emma back to Charming and Henry. Thats when Snow drew out her sword and exposed Lancelot as Cora, who was planning to use the portal to get to Regina. Cora then transformed back into her original form and admitted that she killed Lancelot a while back and was waiting for a opportunity to join her daughter and adopted grandson. Cora then unleashes her power on both Snow and Emma, but thanks to Emma setting the tree on fire, Mulan uses the fire that Cora was going to use to aim at Emma to instead aim at Cora, who disappears with a warning to get even. At this point, and now that they were all fooled by Cora, Mulan asks Snow to be the leader, while Emma tells her mother that she had to burn the tree so Cora would not get to Henry but realizes how Snow wanted to protect her, saying she is not use to people putting her first, but Snow/Mary Margaret tells Emma to get use to it. After the women left the room, Cora reappeared with a potion bottle that contains the contents of the portal's magic, which shows off a glow that reveals that it still works.

'The Doctor:'. Regina (Lana Parrilla) keeps seeing a ghostly figure in Storybrooke, someone who looks like her dearly departed true love, Daniel (Noah Bean).

In flashbacks, we’ll see Dr. Whale at work, using what looks like Daniel’s heart (but might be someone else,’s someone evil). In Storybrooke, it looks like Daniel comes for Regina’s throat. Why? Too soon to tell!

OMG!! I wonder if Cora shape-shifted into HIM??!!

2x04 The Crocodile :

In the Enchanted Forest

As Rumpelstiltskin returns home, he discovers Baelfire is all alone in the place. Realizing that his wife Milah has gone down to a village pub, Rumpelstiltskin and Baelfire decide to comfront her there, only to discover that Milah have been drinking with a group of visiting pirates. It turns out that Milah is not happy being married to Rumpelstiltskin because she sees him as a coward, but Baelfire does convince her to somehow come home. Unfortunately, the next day, Rumpelstiltskin learns that Milah never came home and was taken by the pirates. He arrives to a ship and meets Killian Jones, the captain of the vessel, asking that he turn Milah over to him. Killian then offers Rumpelstiltskin a chance to fight him, only to let Rumpelstiltskin's cowardice get the best of him. Several years later, the now-sinister Rumpelstiltskin shows up at a tavern, where he was approached by William Smee about a magic bean that can transport between worlds. But before that transaction can take place, Jones shows up and as expected Rumpelstiltskin is ready, telling Jones that they will finally have that long-awaited duel.
At the area near the docks, Jones tells Rumpelstiltskin that Milah died years ago, so the two decide on a swordfight to the finish with Rumpelstiltskin gaining the upper hand and finally defeating Jones. But just as he was about to use his power to rip Jones' heart out, a female pirate came out. It turned out that Milah was never dead and was living among them as Jones' lover and asked that their lives be spared in exchange for the bean. Milah explains that she wanted a life of adventure to Rumpelstiltskin, who was upset that she would leave both him and their son behind, only to reveal that she hated Rumpelstiltskin too much to stay with him. Milah then throws the bean to Killian so Rumpelstilskin would keep his promise, but a furious Rumpelstiltskin decides make them pay by ripping her heart out and killing her instantly, followed by slicing off Jones' left hand, believing that he had the bean in his fist. Killian then stabs Rumpelstiltskin but to no effect, as the Dark One takes Killian's left hand and disappears. As it turns out, Rumpelstiltskin was once again tricked by Jones, who kept the bean in the other hand, then brings out a kidnapped Smee to make sure the bean worked and after throwing it into the ocean, a portal opens up. Smee then agreed to join Killian's crew as they prepare to enter the portal for a place called Neverland.

In Storybrooke

At Mr. Gold's mansion, Belle, who after having a nightmare in which Mr. Gold/Rumpelstiltskin gives her a necklace only to see him later choke Leroy/Grumpy, is upset with dealing how she is being treated by him after she sees him spinning gold and mixing potions in the basement. The following morning, Belle demanded Mr. Gold/Rumpelstiltskin to come clean as to why he was doing this. When he refuses to explain why, Belle leaves him, prompting a upset Mr. Gold to turn to David for help. As they search the town for Belle, the residents refuse to help and even after visiting Belle's father Moe French at his home, they come away empty handed not forgetting what happened during Moe's previous encounter with Mr. Gold. Unaware to both David and Mr. Gold, Belle was actually hiding out at Granny's, where she made fast friends with Ruby/Red Riding Hood, who then suggested that given Belle's love for books, she should take the job as the librarian at the Storybrooke Library. Unfortunately, after leaving the diner en route to the library, she is kidnapped by William Smee, who had been hired by Moe to take Belle to the mines and to have her memory erased once they arrived to the city limits. But thanks to Ruby's ability to trace Belle's scent, David, Mr. Gold and Ruby reached Belle in time and to stop Moe from going through with his plan, with the help of Mr. Gold's magic. Belle, however, is mad at both Moe and Mr. Gold and tells the two that she never wants to speak to either men again.
Later on that day, Ruby gave Belle a gift, which was the keys to the library. As she opens up the place, Belle sees Mr. Gold (who gave her the keys) inside despite the warning she gave him back at the mine. He tells Belle that he came to apologize to her and to explain the real reason why he created the curse in the first place, which was to find Baelfire and to hopefully overcome his life as being a cowardly person through magic. Mr. Gold had hope that once the curse was broken that he would be able to find his son beyond Storybrooke, but now that no one can leave the town, he was hoping to find a way to break that curse as well. As Belle and Mr. Gold made up now that she has forgiven him and promises to have a hamburger together, it turns out that hours later Mr. Gold had already kept one detail from Belle, a kidnapped William Smee locked up in his basement. It turns out that Mr. Gold wanted to get answers from him about Killian Jones/Captain Hook, but Smee, who was left behind after Killian escaped the curse, says that he has not shown up in Storybrooke yet.

Regina, Rumple Redemption Podcast:

“It’s two characters who have really dark pasts who are trying to redeem themselves in different ways. Rumplestiltskin is absolutely trying to not lose another person he loves but of course what he then did to Smee at the end of the episode shows that he’s also not putting on a white hat and riding off into the sunset. And I think Regina is dealing with the fact that her heart probably was healed when she chose Henry over that curse and she really is trying to win him back and she really is trying to do the right thing, and she’s really trying to return to that person she was before the Stable Boy.”

'The Doctor:'

"Once Upon a Time finally revealed the Fairy Tale Land identity of the mysterious Dr. Whale in "The Doctor." His initial meeting with Regina was the trigger that turned the sweet, unmalicious girl into the Evil Queen all due to the manipulations of Rumple. Surprisingly, Regina's story was quite sad and makes her slightly more sympathetic.

The Doctor is Revealed and the Evil Queen Born

Doctor Whale's true identity was finally revealed to be Dr. Victor Frankenstein. This was a bit of a let down because I always hoped that Dr. Whale would be a good, sweet guy, almost the opposite of Dr. Frankenstein. Plus, the preview implied that's who he was and I thought maybe that was to mislead us.

At the same time, the story was quite interesting, especially in Fairy Tale Land That Was. Regina was manipulated into using dark magic, when Rumple made a deal with Frankenstein and the Mad Hatter.

Frankenstein pretended at an attempt to bring Daniel back to life, so he could take the magical heart that he learned about from Rumple. With Daniel still dead, Regina had no reason to stay pure and hopeful, instead she turned to her dark side.

She showed up to Rumple dressed in black and grabbed a poor girl's heart and crushed it. Meanwhile, Frankenstein was back in his magical realm using the heart meant for Daniel to bring his brother back to life.

The birth of the Evil Queen is a sad story. Rumple has manipulated the poor Regina at every move. It is he that is to blame for her corruption and it almost makes Regina a sympathetic character. She has been played from the very beginning. Even the Evil Queen's curse was due to the evil Rumple.

Regina Wants Redemption

The Evil Queen wants Henry back and realized the only way is to give up magic. She went to Archie for help. She took the first step, realized what her problem was and then sought out help.

Only her progress was interrupted when Dr. Whale decided to "help" Regina by bringing Daniel back to life. Not only did Dr. Whale lose his arm, but Daniel attacked Henry at the staples.

When it came down to it, Daniel didn't want to live this new life and Regina couldn't allow him to either. Though, this meeting gave them the opportunity to say good-bye. Despite her love for him, Regina used magic to freeze Daniel and then crushed him into dust.

Instead of seeking revenge against Dr. Whale or acting out against another, Regina returned to Archie for help. She used magic and wanted to stop. I never thought I'd see it in a million years, but Regina has seen the error of her ways and truly wants to change.

There's no angle. If she stops using magic, she realizes she can get her son back and that's all that matters. It's unlikely to be an easy quest for her. What happens if she can use her magic to get Emma and Snow back? Will she use it for Henry? Or, deny him his other mother and grandmother?

The Gals Hook Hook

In Fairy Tale Land That Is, Snow, Emma, Mulan and Aurora returned to the village and found it ransacked. At first they believed it was done by Ogres, but quickly recognized the handiwork of Cora.

There is only one survivor Killian Jones. He told them he lost his hand in an Ogre attack and asked them to help him. They were immediately suspicious and tied Killian to a tree. He spinned them a story, but Emma recognized the lies. She calls for the Ogres and threatened to leave him.

Killian believed her threat and revealed the truth. He told them his true identity of Hook and that he was working with Cora. Cora left him behind to find out how they were planning on returning to Storybrooke. He even told them about the remains of the magic wardrobe that Cora to took.

Emma may be out of her world, but she has remained a strong force among the other strong women with her. Killian let them in on a secret. In order to get to Storybrooke, they need to retrieve a compass that is up the bean stalk and through a giant.

The woman decided to go with Killian to get this mysterious compass."

'The Doctor Summary:'

Aurora, Mulan, Emma and Snow return from facing down Cora to find their entire camp dead. The people all had their hearts ripped out by Cora. They find one survivor, it's Captain Hook. Storybrooke Dr. Whale approaches David, who promptly decks him for sleeping with Snow while they were cursed. With that out of the way, the doctor asks if David is trying to build a portal back to their Land. Dr. Whale wants to know if the whole land still exists. Regina visits Dr. Hopper to discuss her difficulties in resisting the use of magic. He commends her for the effort. Dr. Whale busts in demanding she send him back to his brother, who isn't in Storybrooke. "Your curse only brought the living," Whale says. "Well then I'm sorry for your loss," Regina says. Hopper kicks Whale out, then he asks Regina if she was telling the truth. "I only brought who I wanted," she says. Enchanted Forest Rumplestiltskin teaches Regina how to use magic on a unicorn. She freezes it in place and he tells her to take its heart, reminding her no harm will come to it, unless she wants it. She tries but recoils because it's innocent. Rumplestiltskin takes it and explains when you take something's heart you're controlling it. He tosses her the heart and tells her to kill it. She looks at the still breathing unicorn, but hesitates. He asks what's holding her back. Regina goes to visit her true love Daniel. Storybrooke Regina tells Hopper about Daniel, who's dead but preserved with an enchantment spell in her family mausoleum. Hopper advises her to try to let go of the past, but she's not ready and leaves. Regina drives home in the pouring rain and lightning and thinks she sees Daniel on the street. The next day, David takes Henry to the stables to introduce him to his "steed" to learn to become a proper knight. He has to learn to take care of him before he can ride him. He leaves Henry with him. Regina visits her family mausoleum. She finds Daniel's crypt empty. Enchanted Forest Rumplestiltskin refuses to teach Regina more magic until she tells him why she wants to learn. She wants to bring someone back from the dead to have true happiness. But he says "dead is dead." The Mad Hatter appears and presents Rumple with a glowing orb, but he couldn't get the other thing that Rumple needs to get to another land without magic. Jefferson overhears and says he knows a wizard that can bring back the dead. He'll bring him to Regina if she gets him a royal passport. Enchanted Forest, present Mulan knows Hook as a blacksmith who came to the camp a couple months ago. Emma is suspicious. He says he survived by hiding under the dead bodies. Emma tells him she can tell when people are lying. A moment later, she puts a knife to his throat and asks who he really is. Storybrooke Regina looks around the hospital basement for Dr. Whale. Enchanted Forest Jefferson takes Regina to see a wizard who, he says, is unfamiliar with their ways and their magic. It's Dr. Whale (although he's never called that). He asks to see the "patient." He examines Daniel and says his condition is ideal but his procedure is experimental. He wants a strong magical heart in exchange, but she refuses to use magic "for evil." But she knows someone who can help. Storybrooke Regina finds the morgue ransacked and Dr. Whale knocked out on the floor. She finds him under a table with a severed arm on it. She knows he took Daniel and one of her hearts. He admits he brought him back to life, but says he's not Daniel. Enchanted Regina takes Jefferson and Dr. Whale to see her mother's fireplace, the entryway to Cora's vault. They follow the sounds of the beating hearts. The walls are lined with them. Dr. Whale takes one. Storybrooke David finds Regina waiting outside Dr. Whale's hospital room. She tells him that Dr. Whale brought Daniel back. "He practices something more powerful than magic, or so I was told. All he needed was a heart, and he took one of mine," Regina says. "You have hearts here?" David asks. Regina wants to find Daniel and thinks he might be going to the last place he remembers, where he met her -- the stables. David realizes Henry is there. At the stables, Henry is brushing his steed when the horses all start to freak out and he gets knocked over. Daniel appears. Enchanted Forest, Present Emma ties Hook to a tree and summons ogres to make him talk. He gives in and tells them he's Captain Hook and Cora wanted him to gather info on Storybrooke so she knows what to expect when she gets there. She plans to use the enchanted ashes to open a portal. As the ogres approach, Hook offers to help them if they promise to take him to Storybrooke. Cora needs an enchanted compass to make the portal work and he offers to lead them to it. Emma asks why he wants to go to Storybrooke. "To exact revenge on the man who took my hand, Rumplestiltskin," Hook says. Storybrooke Henry tries to talk to Daniel, who is confused and out of sorts. He picks Henry up by the neck. Regina and David arrive and free Henry. David locks Daniel in a stable and asks Regina to use magic to subdue him, but she refuses. Daniel pounds on the stables from inside and is close to breaking the door, so David takes out his gun. She begs with him to let her talk to Daniel. She's sure he won't hurt her. Enchanted Forest On a dark and stormy night, Dr. Whale prepares to revive Daniel, but tells them he has to do it alone. Jefferson and Regina watch from through a tent as Dr. Whale seems to plunge the heart into Daniel's chest as lightning strikes the tent he's working in. Dr. Whale tells Regina he failed, the heart wasn't strong enough to withstand the procedure. Storybrooke Regina opens the stable door and stares longingly at her once dead fiancé. He approaches her slowly but then grabs her around the neck. She tells him she loves him and he snaps out of it and recognizes her. But he's in pain and asks her to let him go. She doesn't want to lose him again. He's wracked with pain and tells her to love again. Then he starts to come after her again. She uses magic to freeze him in place, then makes him disappear. Enchanted Forest, Present Hook leads the ladies to the compass. Emma and Snow are sure it's a trap and are hoping to stay one step ahead of Cora. They see a giant bean stalk leading up into the sky. "It's not the climbing you need to worry about, it's the giant at the top," Hook says. Enchanted Forest Regina interrupts Rumple working with his new magic pupil. When he says he needed someone more dedicated, she rips his new pupil's heart out and crushes it to dust. Storybrooke Regina visits Dr. Hopper to confess she used magic. Enchanted Forest Jefferson takes Dr. Whale into the forest to see Rumplestiltskin, pleased with himself for fooling Regina. He still has the beating heart. "Thanks to your effort, I've made my monster. Now I do hope you'll be able to make yours," Rumplestiltskin says. Dr. Whale says he's not making a monster and what he's using goes far beyond magic. Rumplestiltskin asks if he wants to wager on which is more powerful, magic or his methods. Whale declines. Jefferson takes Dr. Whale (or whoever he is) back to his land. Storybrooke A badly wounded Dr. Whale visits Mr. Gold carrying a cooler... that contains his arm. He wants Gold to reattach it. He thought that if he brought Daniel back, Regina would return him to his world. "I want to see my brother, to try to bring him back again," Whale says. "The first time ended badly, I need to return and try it once more," he says. In exchange for reattaching his arm, Gold demands Dr. Whale say "it." He gives in: "I need magic." With a wave of his hand, Gold reattaches Whale's arm, and calls him Victor. In another (black and white) land on another stormy night, the doctor returns to his lab atop a castle with lightning striking all around. He presents his lab assistant with "the final piece of the puzzle," the magic heart. He flips a switch and lightning courses through the body on his table. "It's alive," he says. "Welcome back, brother," he says to the stitched together corpse. "It's magic, Dr. Frankenstein," his assistant says. "No, not magic. Science," he says.

2x05 - The Doctor
By Amy Degenstein-Hood

In this week’s episode, we got to see more into Regina’s past and some of the pieces of why she became “The Evil Queen” fell into place. We also, finally, learned the true identity of one of Storybrooke’s most mysterious characters, Dr. Whale.

We begin in FTL where Emma, Snow, Mulan and Aurora return to the camp to find everyone dead, their hearts ripped out. They realize that Cora must be responsible, and as they search they find one survivor. He appears to be badly shaken and afraid. As we finally see his face, we realize it is Hook.

In SB, Dr. Whale finds David/Charming to talk to him about the fate of the other realms. David turns and punches him square in the jaw, still angry over the one night stand with Snow. This seems to get the awkward anger out of his system and he sits to talk with Whale. We then see Regina going to see Archie/Jiminy. She is seeking help for her struggle to not use magic. Whale bursts in the door, demanding to be sent back to his land, and back to his brother. He says that his brother is dead, and he needs to get back to him. Regina tells him she can’t help him, and that she only brought the living with her to this land. Archie kicks Whale out, but then asks Regina if she has been entirely truthful. He knows she brought her father’s grave, and he asks if she brought anyone else’s. He asks for her trust, and tells her that to stop using magic may be harder than starting.

In a flashback of FTL, we see Rumple teaching a younger Regina how to use magic. They are working with a binding spell, which Regina is able to subdue a black unicorn with. She is pleased until Rumple then instructs her to rip out its heart. Rumple tells her that a creature will be unharmed, but in her control if she takes their heart. He demonstrates, and tells her that hearts have been removed become stronger, and enchanted. He tosses the heart to Regina and tells her to crush it and kill the unicorn. She can’t do it. We then see her standing over Daniel’s body, which has been preserved in a glass coffin by an enchantment spell.

We then see Regina, very sad, telling Archie a bit about Daniel. She sheds a tear, and becomes uncomfortable with being so vulnerable. She leaves despite a storm outside. As she is driving, she sees Daniel standing on a street corner. The lightning flashes and he is gone. The next day, we see Charming and Henry at the stables. Charming is showing Henry his new steed, and tells him that he will begin training as a knight. Henry is excited to ride, but finds out he has to build his bond with his horse first before they can ride. Charming leaves Henry to care for the horse while he goes to check in out the Dwarves. In the cemetery, we see Regina go into her vault. She flings open a door, and looks shocked that the glass coffin is empty.

Flashback to past FTL, we see Rumple and Regina talking about magic. Regina wants to learn magic to bring the dead back, so that she and Daniel can be together. Rumple tells her it is not possible. The Hatter comes in and offers up a crystal ball to Rumple. (This could be both the ball that sits atop Maleficent’s staff, and also the crystal ball used by the Wicked Witch in The Wizard of Oz) Rumple asks if Jefferson/Hatter was able to get the slippers as well. (Certainly referring to the Ruby Slippers) but Jefferson says they were already moved to another land. Rumple says he needed them to get to another land, and Jefferson offers to take him via his hat. Rumple says that is not possible, Jefferson’s hat can only take people between magical realms, not to a land without magic. Rumple tells Jefferson to take as much gold as he wants, and then tells Regina to leave. He says he can’t teach her while she lives in the past. As Rumple leaves, Jefferson tells Regina he knows a man who is a wizard, and can bring back the dead. Jefferson wants a pass to travel freely in Regina’s kingdom in return for his help.

In current FTL, we see Hook being questioned by Emma. He paints a sad story of how he had to hide to save himself from Cora. Emma knows that he is lying. They tie him to a tree and yell loudly to attract the ogres. Hook continues to profess his innocence until the ogres get very close. He then admits that he is Captain Hook. He tells them that Cora wanted him to gain their trust in order to find a compass that will help her get to Storybrooke. Emma asks why Hook wants to travel there, and she believes him when he tells her it is to get revenge on Rumple.

Back in SB during the storm, Regina goes to find Dr. Whale. His operating room is completely torn apart. The lights are flickering and flashing. Regina pulls back a cover and finds a bloody arm. She searches and eventually finds Whale lying in the floor. His arm has been ripped off. He confesses that he brought Daniel back from the dead, but that he is not himself. Whale says that he is a monster now. Whale is taken to the hospital. Regina and Charming talk about what has happened. She tells him about Daniel being brought back. She says Whale practices something more powerful than magic. She doesn’t know whose heart Whale took. Regina says (as she said originally about her mother) that she has taken so many hearts she can’t know whose they are. Regina tells Charming that Daniel will be headed for the stables, which is where they spent their last moments together in FTL before her mother killed him. Charming tells her that Henry is at the stable alone, and they rush off to find him. We then see Henry, grooming his horse, and Daniel enters the stall. Henry reaches to try and help Daniel, but Daniel is seeing flashes of Cora reaching to rip out his heart and he grabs Henry abound the throat.

In past FTL, Jefferson introduces Regina to a man we recognize as Dr. Whale. She says “You’re the wizard?” He rises and says he prefers to be called Doctor. He rises and we see him dressed a long steam punk type coat, and John Lennon round glasses. Regina takes him to Daniel’s body, which the Doctor says is in perfect condition to attempt reanimation. He admits he has never succeeded, but that with the enchanted hearts he has heard are in this land, he is confident it will work. Regular hearts are too weak to withstand the procedure. Regina is desperate to have Daniel back, so she takes the Doctor to her mother’s vault of hearts. She says her mother took too many hearts to keep track of who they belonged to. I have a feeling that the hearts, whether Regina’s or Cora’s will come into play with the OZ stories/ Tin Man as that begins to play out. He was after all, in search of a heart.

Back in the stable in SB, Regina and Charming rush in and save Henry from Daniel. Charming wants to destroy him, but Regina begs him to let her see him and speak to him. She doesn’t want to use magic on him. She is crying and pleading with Charming. Finally he agrees.

In past FTL, we see the Doctor’s shadow through the side of a tent. Lightning flashes and he appears to try and put the heart into Daniel. He comes out and tells Regina that he failed; he was unable to bring Daniel back. Regina walks slowly into the tent, and weeps on Daniels chest.

In SB, Regina opens the stall door and smiles at seeing Daniel alive again. He grabs her throat, but when she says she loves him, he snaps out of it for a moment. They embrace. He is writhing in pain. He begs her to help him, to let him go. He says it is the only way to be free from his horrible pain. She says she can’t let him go, that she loves him. He holds her face and says “Then love again.. Regina is crying and Daniel again becomes more the monster than the man. He appears not to recognize her again. He reaches for her throat and she casts the binding spell we say at the beginning with the unicorn. Sobbing and with her hand on his, she waves her hand and he vanishes. She says “Goodbye, Daniel”, and he is gone.

In current FTL, we see Hook has lead the group to a beanstalk reaching into the sky. Hook says it is not the climb they have to worry about, it is the giant at the top.

In a flashback SB, we see Regina approach Rumple while he is teaching another woman magic. He says he needed someone more dedicated than her. Regina reaches and pulls the woman’s heart out. Rumple is pleased. Later, Jefferson and the Doctor meet up with Rumple. Rumple says he is happy with their work. The Doctor never tried to save Daniel. It was all a ruse to break Regina’s heart even more so that she would move forward with her training. The Doctor is given the heart which he said he needs to bring his brother back in his land. He argues briefly with Rumple about magic vs. Science. Rumple says he has a feeling that the Doctor will see it his way soon. Now that the Doctor has helped Rumple create his “monster” in Regina, he bids him farewell.

In SB, Whale goes to Rumple, asking for him to reattach his arm. Rumple finds it amusing that the science used in a hospital is not the method the doctor chose for healing. He makes Whale say that he needs magic. Whale says he only brought Daniel back because he thought Regina would help him get back to his brother in his old land so that he could try and bring his back again. Suddenly Whale’s arm is reattached. “Always nice doing business with you, Victor”, Rumple says to Whale after reattaching his arm. Victor Frankenstein, an iconic Doctor from literature, is Whale’s true identity. In a bit of a hint from earlier, James Whale was also the name of the man who directed the Frankenstein movie.

In the Doctor’s land (which is black and white), we see him perform the experiment to bring a dead man back to life. Both the beginning of Wizard of Oz and the old Frankenstein movies were in black and white. I’m not sure if this will tie in, but it would be an interesting twist. I’m wondering if Whale has more than one identity. The way that Rumple is Beast and Crocodile, perhaps Whale is both Frankenstein and The Wizard of Oz?

The lightning flashes as the storm rages. We see a hand rise up and hold the doctor’s hand. “Welcome back brother”, he says as he smiled down. Igor says to the doctor that it is like magic, to which he replies, “No. It’s science.”

"Regina's Threat Level: Low for the good guys, sky high for mommy dearest and Rumpelstiltskin. I believe Regina is committed to rehabilitating her image enough to earn Henry’s love, but I also believe she won’t be able to resist whipping out that spell book when necessary, and with Cora desperate to make her way to Storybrooke, Regina is going to need to return to magic sooner rather than later."

Season 2 Villains!

"Season two of Once Upon A Time has brought us many awesome things including present day fairy tale world shenanigans, Charming bonding with Henry, a scary cool Dementor…err, I mean Wraith, and a heartfelt reunion between Jefferson and Grace. There is no doubt about it, this season is off to a fantastic start, but there is one tiny development that has me worried about the fate of Storybrooke’s newly awakened citizens: the town is being flooded with villains.

Now every fairy tale needs a big bad, but Storybrooke almost has enough villains to start up its own branch of the Evil League of Evil. Things weren’t quite as dire in season one when the only villains that posed an immediate threat were Regina and Mr. Gold, and their machinations were always laced with just enough moral ambiguity to make us love to hate them, rather than hate them outright. Things are dicier this year. With the curse broken, characters like King George and Cora suddenly pose a very real threat to the characters we love. They’re not just back, they’re back and ready to make up for 28 years worth of lost havoc-wreaking time. Then there’s Captain Hook, the new villain in town and the wild card. The promo for this Sunday’s episode, “The Crocodile” proclaims him to be “more evil and more despicable” than Rumpelstiltskin. Sounds alarming, yes?

One of these characters will likely emerge as season two’s central antagonist before long, but I’m not prepared to completely rule out a team-up just yet either, especially not when they all share at least one common enemy or goal. In most cases that goal seems to be making the Charming family suffer– honestly, the way things are going, Henry might as well paint a big, red target on his back now because his fake great-grandfather and adopted great-grandmother both appear to have plans for him.

With all of that in mind, let’s take a closer look at the current big bad candidates and evaluate their threat level to the good citizens of Storybrooke.

Regina

Regina used to be the baddest lady in the kingdom. She didn’t get that “Evil Queen” moniker for nothing; to name just a few of her crimes, she committed patricide, released the curse that trapped everyone in Storybrooke and crushed the poor Huntsman’s heart with her bare hands. However, the more we see of Regina’s backstory the easier it is to understand her actions. She wants all of the power because she knows what it is to be powerless. She is also self aware enough to understand that she is living the very life she wanted to avoid and is taking steps to redeem herself in the eyes of her son.

Threat Level: Low for the good guys, sky high for mommy dearest and Rumpelstiltskin. I believe Regina is committed to rehabilitating her image enough to earn Henry’s love, but I also believe she won’t be able to resist whipping out that spell book when necessary, and with Cora desperate to make her way to Storybrooke, Regina is going to need to return to magic sooner rather than later.

Rumpelstiltskin/Mr. Gold

Rumpelstiltskin is flirting with redemption this season as well, thanks to his his reunion with Belle. His commitment seems shakier than Regina’s though, especially when we take into account the fact that he released magic in Storybrooke. Much of his motivation comes from a desire to find his son, but like Regina, he also hates to be rendered powerless. A powered up Rumpelstiltskin is a dangerous thing though. We’ve seen that he has meddled in the lives of nearly every character on the show with disastrous results. In fact, he’s responsible for pushing Regina over to the darkside.

Threat Level: Unclear. Even with Belle by his side, Rumpelstiltskin is unpredictable. He’s like a con man, it’s hard to trust him and equally hard not to. I blame Robert Carlyle for being so darn brilliant in the role.

Cora

Regina and Rumpelstiltskin both have redeeming qualities. It’s easy to believe that deep down there is still good in them. But Cora? Cora is the worst. She’s a controlling, monstrous human being who made her daughter’s life a living hell. Maybe she too has a tragic past that explains her current state of evilness, but it’s going to have to be a ten-hankie sob story to make her look sympathetic.

Threat Level: High. Very high. If/when Cora makes her way to Storybrooke she’s going to be gunning for Regina, and by extension, Henry, because nothing would hurt Regina more than losing her son.

King George

Charming’s fake dad keeps finding new and innovative ways to express his awfulness. In the most recent episode, we discovered he tricked Snow into drinking a potion to make her barren. Why? Because he wants to destroy Charming’s happiness and he doesn’t even have a decent reason to do it. At least Regina’s vendetta against Snow has a smidgeon of logic behind it, but King George has been wrecking Charming’s life since the day he met him. Now that he remembers that he’s a terrible person, he’ll no doubt continue his pet project to make Charming miserable.

Threat Level: Medium. On his own, George will most likely just be a nuisance to Charming and Henry, but if he ends up teaming up with Cora he could become a much bigger threat.

Captain Hook

Ah, Captain Hook. Well, if he’s anything like his Disney counterpart, he’ll be a menacing sort, and the promo did proclaim him to be scarier than Rumpelstiltskin. We’ll have to wait until Sunday to see him in action, but if he’s as deadly as he is gorgeous, the people of Storybrooke are screwed.

Threat Level: Yet to be determined.

Which villain do you think has earned the title of the evilest of them all? Did I leave any villains (or potential villains) off the list? Share your thoughts in the comments!"

02X06: 'Tallahasse' Synopsis!

At the base of the beanstalk, Hook explains that the magic portal beans are all gone. Jack fought the giants and the giants destroyed the beans, only one giant survived and he's at the top of the stalk. Cora has the wardrobe ashes to make a portal, but she needs the compass beyond the giant to find their land. Hook swears allegiance to whoever gets him there first. The beanstalk is enchanted to repel intruders, but he has a counter-spell from Cora for two people. Snow unties him. Portland, Oregon, 11 years ago Emma steals a yellow VW bug. As she's driving off she's freaked out to find a man in her back seat. (It's the same guy who got the "Broken" post card in the season premiere.) He's not at all bothered by the fact she stole his car and asks her out for drinks, introducing himself as Neal Cassady. In the process, she runs a stop sign and gets pulled over. Neal talks his way out of the ticket by saying he's teaching his girlfriend how to drive. After the cop lets them off with a warning, the man says "we" got lucky. Emma realizes she just stole a stolen car. Enchanted Forest The women argue about who's going to go with Hook. Emma wins. Mulan gives her powdered poppies and promises to chop down the beanstalk if she's not back in 10 hours. Hook gives Emma the magic wrist cuff and they start climbing. Halfway up the stalk, Hook tries to charm Emma into trusting him. He guesses she was abandoned as a child and asks if she's ever been in love. She says no. Portland A very pregnant Emma and Neal go into a convenience store. As he distracts the store owner by asking for directions, she combs the aisles and steals. He pockets candy bars and a customer sees him. Emma makes a distraction by faking labor and they get away. When she walks out, she reveals her belly was just her backpack. Later, outside a hotel, they wait for a family to leave and rush in to make use of the free room. There's a dream catcher left behind, and Neal's interested in the idea it can stop bad dreams. He suggests they stop traveling and settle down. She closes her eyes and picks a spot on the map -- Tallahassee. At the base of the bean stalk, they decide to sleep in shifts. Aurora confesses she hasn't been able to sleep well since waking up from her curse. Snow shares that she went through the same thing and had terrible nightmares, but Charming kept watch over her. Snow convinces Aurora to try to sleep while she stands guard. Emma and Hook reach the top of the stalk, a decimated castle where the final battle was fought. Emma cuts her hand and Hook carefully bandages it for her. Hook suggests they wait for the giant to fall asleep and then sneak past him into the cave. Emma doesn't want to wait and suggests using the poppy powder instead. Emma asks about his tattoo of "Milah," from his answer she can tell it's a love he lost and realizes that Rumplestiltskin took her from him. She admits she was in love once. Neal shows Emma a wanted poster with his face on it. He stole watches from a jewelry store in Phoenix when the manager left them unlocked. They're still in a locker in Portland. He tells her he can't go to Tallahassee and says he has to go to Canada alone. He doesn't want to put her at risk. She suggests she go get the watches because no one's looking for her and then they can change their identities and go to Tallahassee. She tells him she loves him. At the top of the beanstalk, Emma hugs the top of a stone statue by a giant doorway while Hook summons the giant by making a ruckus. When the giant comes out, he's much taller than they expected, so Hook taunts him and dances around until the giant bends down enough for Emma to throw the powder in his face. He passes out immediately. At the base of the beanstalk, Mulan marks the hours with a sundial. Emma wakes Aurora up from her nightmare. She describes a red room with fire all around and someone else in the room. Snow promises the nightmares will fade away, like they did for her. Emma and Hook walk through the giant's treasure trove, filled with gold. At the train station, Emma passes by two cops and looks for Neal's locker. She uses his key to open it, takes the bag and walks out. In the treasure trove, they find skeleton Jack and Emma stops Hook from stumbling into a trip wire. Present Emma rejoins Neal in the car and they celebrate their haul. He leaves to go meet the fence and makes plans to meet her at 9 p.m. sharp. He gives her a watch so she can be on time. They look forward to Tallasassee. Neal walks down the dark street with the bag and notices a man walking behind him. He runs. The man catches up and tackles him. Neal thinks he's a cop, but the man says if he wants to protect Emma, he'll listen. It's August (Pinnochio). August says he's Emma's guardian angel and has been looking for her for two years. He says they were in the same home as kids. Neal is just trying to do right by Emma. August says Emma has a destiny and Neal's going to keep her from it. August ask if he believes in magic. He has something to show Neal to make him believe. He opens a case and Neal looks in. He can't believe what he sees. August explains there's a curse that needs to be broken. "I was tasked with keeping her on track and you, my friend, just got caught in the crossfire," August says. He has a story for Neal and after that he has to decide whether to do the right thing. Later, Emma checks her watch and calls Neal. His phone is disconnected. A cop comes out of the shadows and tells her Neal called in a tip to check the surveillance at the train station and left her to take the fall. Back with the treasure, Emma nd Hook are still looking for the compass when the giant comes running. His giant steps cause the ceiling to fall in on Hook. The giant grabs for Emma. Neal meets up with August, who tells him Emma got 11 months in minimum security and it's going to work out for her. Neal feels awful that it isn't him doing the time and gives August all the money from the fenced watches to give Emma. He also got a clean VIN for the bug and he wants that to go to Emma. August promises to send Neal a postcard if Emma ever breaks the curse. Emma tries to explains herself to the giant, saying she needs the compass to save her son. He's not sympathetic because humans killed his whole family. Emma bites on his hand and he drops her. She runs to Jack's sword and the giant follows, stumbling over the trip wire. A giant cage crashes down around him and traps him. Emma demands the compass, but he refuses, thinking she'll kill him either way. He says humans massacred his kind and destroyed their beans, not the version Hook told. He gives her the compass from his pocket. "See? I'm not the bad guy," he says. Emma feels bad for him when he says he's alone. He thinks all humans are killers, but she tells him he's wrong and walks away. He gets up, easily breaking his cage. He opens a hole in the wall for her and tells her to go before he changes his mind. She points out he owes her two favors for both times she didn't kill him. Emma goes back to free Hook. She gets him out from under a rock but then cuffs him to the wall. He tries to make the case that he's been honest with her, but she doesn't want to take the risk that she's wrong about him. She's sure the giant won't kill him, she just wants a head start. At the base of the beanstalk, Mulan notices 10 hours have passed and starts to cut down the stalk. Snow tackles her to make her stop. Emma comes down. She explains a "friend" is watching Hook and they have a 10 hour head start. Snow lectures her for telling Mulan to cut down the beanstalk , saying they leave together. Phoenix Minimum Security Emma gets a package from Phuket. Car keys, on the key chain Neal stole for her. Emma is holding her positive pregnancy test. Storybrooke Henry wakes up screaming from a terrible nightmare. David lights a candle for him, like he used to do for Snow. Henry describes a red room with no doors or windows and curtains that were on fire and there was someone else there and she staring at him through the flames. 02x09- "On December 2, ABC is airing another new episode, titled “Queen Of Hearts.” I think it’s safe to assume it’s ("#*Cora-heavy*#"). Actually, the description confirms it:

Hook and Cora face off with Emma and Mary Margaret in a race for the compass; Mr. Gold and Regina plan to kill anyone who enters the portal."

*Definitely* Cora!!

2×05 – The Doctor
–[Present Fairy Tale World]–

(Emma, Mary Margaret, Mulan, and Aurora are walking back to the haven.)

Aurora: I don’t know if I can do this. I’m not a very good liar.

MMB: Oh, it’s not really a lie, Aurora. Lancelot did die an honourable death, and Cora did escape. All true.

Emma: Just leave the particulars to us. There’s no reason to cause unnecessary panic amongst your people.

Aurora: I’m not so sure it’s unnecessary-

(Mulan notices that the guard tower is empty.)

Mulan: Wait. The tower – we always have sentries guarding the entrance. Stay close.

(The four of them enter the area below the guard tower, where they find piles of corpses strewn across the field.)

Emma: Oh my God…

Mulan: This can’t be… Our land… We were protected here – hidden. How did the ogres find us?

(Mary Margaret notices that the bodies have bloody chests.)

MMB: Ogres didn’t do this.

Mulan: What?

MMB: Cora did. Their hearts… They were ripped out. This is her magic, twisted and evil. We have to stop her.

Mulan: Too late. She killed them. She killed them all.

MMB: Well, we have to stop her before she hurts anyone else!

Emma: Hey! Hey! Look!

(Emma rushes towards a stack of bodies and debris, under which she sees someone waving their hand.)

Aurora: There’s someone under there.

(Aurora helps Emma free the person, who turns out to be Hook.)

Aurora: He’s alive.

Hook: Please.

MMB: It’s okay.

Hook: Please, help me.

MMB: It’s okay. You’re safe now. We won’t hurt you.

Hook: Thank you. Thank you…

–[Real World]–

(Outside of Granny’s Diner, Dr. Whale approaches David.)

Dr. Whale: You – we need to talk.

(David punches him in the face.)

Dr. Whale: Ow! What the hell was that for?

David: Sleeping with my wife.

Dr. Whale: Kathryn?

David: Snow.

Dr. Whale: Look, I didn’t know, alright? I was cursed.

David: Yeah, I got it. What do you want?

Dr. Whale: So… Is it true? People are saying that you’re trying to find a way to build a portal back to your land, because that’s where you think Emma and Mary Margaret are – that they’re alive.

David: Well, the whispers can stop. I have no secrets from this town. That’s exactly what I’m doing.

Dr. Whale: But the land, it’s… It’s gone. Destroyed by the curse.

David: Apparently not.

Dr. Whale: Well, you having any luck?

David: Not yet. We’re working on it.

Dr. Whale: Does that mean that all the lands still exist?

David: Possibly.

Dr. Whale: So, the Queen lied to us. Again. Are you sure?

David: Remember who we’re talking about.

———–

(Archie answers the door to his office to find Regina standing there.)

Archie: Regina. Are you here to see me?

Regina: I’ve been trying to keep my promise to Henry, but it’s been difficult…

Archie: To not use magic.

Regina: It’s been two days.

Archie: That’s an excellent start. Come on in.

(Regina enters the office and sits on the couch across from Archie.)

Regina: It’s just that, magic is the way I’ve always gotten everything.

Archie: It sounds like it’s also the way you’ve lost everything. Regina, this is your chance to start over – to earn Henry.

(Dr. Whale barges into the room.)

Archie: Dr. Whale, this is highly inappropriate.

Dr. Whale: Send me back.

Regina: Excuse me?

Dr. Whale: To my land. Send me back to my brother.

Regina: Why don’t you check the ‘missing’ board like everyone else?

Dr. Whale: Your curse only brought the living.

Regina: Well then, I’m sorry for your loss. But I’m afraid I can’t send anyone anywhere.

Dr. Whale: Can’t or won’t?

Archie: Dr. Whale, I have to insist, please. Go!

(Dr. Whale exits and Archie shuts the door behind him.)

Archie: Sorry. What you said isn’t entirely true, is it?

Regina: I’m sorry?

Archie: About the curse only taking the living. The grave of your father’s here, right?

Regina: I don’t care about Whale or his brother. I brought who I wanted.

Archie: Anyone else? If you want help, you have to try and trust me. Stopping magic is a lot harder than starting.

–[Fairy Tale World]–

(The Evil Queen and Rumpelstiltskin are having a magic lesson in the forest. They are practicing on a black unicorn.)

Rumpelstiltskin: Now, show me what you’ve learned. Immobilize it.

(She magically freezes the unicorn.)

Evil Queen: There. I did it.

Rumpelstiltskin: Excellent work, my apprentice. Now there’s just one last tiny, tiny, teeny little detail. Take its heart.

Evil Queen: Like what my mother did to-

Rumpelstiltskin: Oh, your true love. Indeed. Then, you already know how it’s done.

(The Evil Queen slowly inches her hand towards the unicorn’s chest.)

Rumpelstiltskin: Gentle. If you do it right, no harm will befall it. Unless, of course, you will it.

(She withdraws her hand.)

Evil Queen: I can’t. It’s innocent.

Rumpelstiltskin: Nothing is innocent.

(Rumpelstiltskin magically removes the unicorn’s heart, which removes the immobilization spell.)

Rumpelstiltskin: Now, it belongs to me. You see, when you take a heart, it becomes enchanted. Stronger than a normal heart. You’re not hurting the beast – you’re controlling it. Now, show me you know what to do with that power.

(He tosses the heart to the Evil Queen.)

Rumpelstiltskin: Kill it.

Evil Queen: What?

Rumpelstiltskin: You’ve seen it done, now do it yourself. Show me, you can take the next step in your training. Crush it.

(She slowly begins to squeeze the heart, but stops when she sees the unicorn wither on the ground in pain.)

Rumpelstiltskin: Dearie, dearie, dearie. And I had such high hopes.

Evil Queen: And I didn’t sign up to kill unicorns.

Rumpelstiltskin: Magic is power. Until you can take power, you’re not learning anything. Do you want me to teach you or not?

Evil Queen: Yes.

Rumpelstiltskin: Then there’s one simple question for you to ponder.

Evil Queen: I’ll tell you anything.

Rumpelstiltskin: I don’t need the answer – you do. What’s holding you back?

–[Real World]–

(Regina and Archie are still sitting in the office together. Regina flashes back to when she put the enchantment spell on Daniel’s body in the Fairy Tale World.)

Regina: His name was Daniel. I preserved his body with an enchantment spell. He’s dead, but frozen. And I’ve kept him in my family mausoleum.

Archie: Because you couldn’t let go of him. If you can’t let go of the past, Regina, it’s doomed to haunt you.

Regina: You know what? I think this has been quite enough.

(Regina gets up and heads for the door. Archie tries to stop her.)

Archie: Regina, wait. I… I can help you.

Regina: I doubt it.

(She leaves.)

———–

(That evening, Regina is driving home during a thunderstorm. As she’s driving, a car cuts her off and she stops abruptly. When she looks up, she sees Daniel staring at her from across the street.)

Regina: Daniel?

(Regina briefly looks away, but when she looks back, Daniel is gone.)

———–

(David and Henry arrive at the stables in David’s truck. David gets out.)

David: Alright!

(Henry also gets out of the truck. David notices him yawning as they enter the stables.)

David: Come on. What’s with the yawn? This isn’t school. It should be fun.

Henry: I couldn’t sleep.

David: Hey. I know. I miss ‘em, too. Now, just think how happy Emma and Snow will be when they come home to find that you’ve become a proper knight. Say hello to your steed.

(They come to a row of stalls housing the horses.)

Henry: Is he mine?

David: This one’s yours.

Henry: Really? So… How do I get on him?

David: Oh, you’re not riding today.

Henry: I’m not?

David: No. There’s much to learn before you hop in the saddle.

Henry: Like what?

David: Well, every morning, you’ll have to muck out his stall. Then, you’ll brush him and feed him. After school, you’ll do it again. Every day, twice a day.

Henry: That’s not riding, that’s babysitting.

David: Ah. Horsesitting. It builds an essential bond. The trust between knight and steed.

Henry: Okay. But, when will I ride him?

David: When the horse tells you. I’m going to go check in on the dwarves – see how the mining’s coming. I’ll pick you up later.

Henry: So… Anything you want to tell me?

———–

(Regina enters her father’s mausoleum at the graveyard. Underground, she enters a room with a glass coffin similar to Snow White’s. However, the coffin is empty and Daniel’s body is gone.)

–[Fairy Tale World]–

(Rumpelstiltskin is spinning straw at the wheel, while the Evil Queen prepares potions.)

Evil Queen: Are you ready to begin?

Rumpelstiltskin: Oh, I’ve been ready. The question is, are you?

Evil Queen: Yes, I am.

Rumpelstiltskin: Tell me why you’re really here.

Evil Queen: For power-

Rumpelstiltskin: Stop wasting my time! What is it you want? Come on. You’ve done all your soul searching. Now tell me.

Evil Queen: Can you teach me how to use magic to bring back the dead?

Rumpelstiltskin: That’s what this is about? The stable boy?

Evil Queen: I want true happiness.

Rumpelstiltskin: Then find it elsewhere, dearie. Magic can do much, but not that. Dead is dead.

Evil Queen: Then I am lost.

Rumpelstiltskin: And I’ve had my time wasted. I’m sorry but, uh, transcending death is beyond even my reach.

(Jefferson enters.)

Jefferson: I thought nothing was beyond your reach? …Busy. Should I…

Rumpelstiltskin: No, no. Nothing important going on here.

Evil Queen: Rumpelstiltskin…

Rumpelstiltskin: Ignore her.

Jefferson: I got what you wanted.

(Jefferson hands Rumpelstiltskin a crystal ball.)

Rumpelstiltskin: What about the slippers?

Jefferson: Oh. Couldn’t find ‘em. Heard talk they’ve already been moved to another land.

Rumpelstiltskin: That’s what I needed to get to that other land.

Jefferson: Well, come with me in my hat. I’m sure we can work something out.

Rumpelstiltskin: No, no. Your hat only transports between magical realms. I need to get to a land without magic.

Jefferson: Why would anyone want that?

Rumpelstiltskin: My business.

Jefferson: You want the ball or not?

(He takes the crystal ball.)

Rumpelstiltskin: Mm… Yes. Help yourself to as much gold as you deem appropriate. Oh, and you. You can let yourself out. Our work is done.

Evil Queen: Wait, so that’s it? You’re not going to teach me anymore?

Rumpelstiltskin: So long as you harbour foolish notions of bringing back the dead, so long as you live in the past, you’ll never find your future. Teaching you is a waste of time.

Jefferson: Pardon me…for eavesdropping, but I think you need to look elsewhere for assistance.

Evil Queen: What do you know about it?

Jefferson: I hear things. Jefferson’s the name, and I’m a man who travels and sees much. And I know the man who can do what you want – bring back the dead. He’s, um, you might say, a wizard. I can bring him to you.

Evil Queen: At what price?

Jefferson: Always a price, indeed. So, here’s mine. Like I said, I’m a man of travels, and I’ve made many enemies along the way and I’d like a royal passport so I can have free reign to traverse your kingdom.

Evil Queen: How would I do that?

Jefferson: Well, you’re the Queen, aren’t you?

Evil Queen: That’s right, I am. And this wizard… Can he really bring someone back from the dead?

Jefferson: Well, if he can’t, no one can.

–[Present Fairy Tale World]–

(Mulan and Emma are watching Hook from a distance.)

Emma: Have you seen him before?

Mulan: Yes, I’ve seen him around. He’s a blacksmith. Came to our camp a couple months ago. Said he lost his hand in an ogre attack. Why would Cora leave a survivor?

Emma: It’s messy. Doesn’t make sense.

Mulan: You think he’s lying?

Emma: I think Cora’s tricked us before. I don’t want that to happen again. Here you go.

(Emma hands him a cup. Mary Margaret and Aurora also join them.)

Hook: I can’t thank you enough for your kindness. Fortune, it seems, has seen fit to show me favour.

Emma: An island full of corpses. You’re the only one to escape. How exactly did that happen?

Hook: She attacked at night – slaughtered everyone in one fell swoop. When she started ripping out people’s hearts, I hid under the bodies of those who had already been killed. Pretended to be dead myself. Mercifully, the ruse worked.

Emma: So much for fortune favouring the brave.

Hook: It was all I could do to survive.

Emma: I’m going to let you in on a little secret. I’m pretty good at knowing when someone is lying to me.

Hook: I’m telling you the truth.

Mulan: We should leave here in case Cora decides to come back.

MMB: We should start searching for a new portal back to Storybrooke. I only got about five minutes with my husband, not to mention my grandson.

Hook: You have a grandson?

MMB: Long story.

Hook: Well, I know this land well. I can guide you.

(Emma draws a dagger and holds it to Hook’s throat.)

Emma: You’re not going to guide us anywhere, until you tell us who you really are.

–[Real World]–

(Regina enters the psych ward in the basement of the hospital. She realizes that it is completely deserted.)

Regina: Dr. Whale? Where are you?

–[Fairy Tale World]–

(At the Evil Queen’s castle, Jefferson and the Evil Queen walk through the halls.)

Evil Queen: Where is he, this wizard? You promised to bring him to me.

Jefferson: Indeed. And off we shall go to see him. But I warn you – be cautious.

Evil Queen: Why? Is he dangerous?

Jefferson: Not to us. But, bear in mind, he’s never been to a world like this before. He’s unfamiliar with our ways – with our magic.

Evil Queen: All I care about are his ways and if they will do what I require.

Jefferson: Well, there’s only one way to find out. May I present to you… Your salvation.

(Jefferson leads her outside, where a man is waiting.)

Evil Queen: You’re the wizard?

Frankenstein: I prefer doctor. But you’re welcome to call me whatever makes you comfortable.

Evil Queen: Very well…Doctor. You understand why you’ve been brought here?

Frankenstein: Of course. Now… Show me the patient.

———–

(The Evil Queen and Jefferson bring Frankenstein to the room where Daniel’s body is magically preserved.)

Frankenstein: It’s remarkable. It’s as if his last breath was drawn just moments ago.

Evil Queen: A preservation spell. Can you bring him back?

Frankenstein: Perhaps. Let’s take a look.

(He makes an incision along Daniel’s hand and squeezes out a bit of blood. He rubs the sample between his fingers.)

Frankenstein: It’s wonderful. His condition is ideal. Apart from being dead, that is.

Evil Queen: Just how many times have you done this, doctor?

Frankenstein: You didn’t tell her?

Evil Queen: Tell… Tell me? Tell me what?

Frankenstein: The procedure is experimental. Success is yet to occur. But if certain conditions are met, I’m optimistic.

Evil Queen: Optimistic?

Jefferson: Just hear him out.

Evil Queen: What kind of charlatan are you?

Frankenstein: I am no such thing. I was told the last crucial piece of the puzzle exists in this land.

Evil Queen: What else do you need?

Frankenstein: A heart. It’s a fragile organ, and I need a strong one. I’ve searched the far reaches of my realm for one with the fortitude to stand the shock of my procedure. None have survived. But they say in your land, there are hearts transformed by magic. Hearts made so powerful, they glow.

Evil Queen: That’s why you’ve come here?

Frankenstein: I need this for my work. So, tell me – how do you change these hearts? How do you enchant them?

Jefferson: Those who practice the dark arts do it by ripping the organ out of the living while it still beats.

Frankenstein: Mmhmm. And you can do this?

Evil Queen: No.

Frankenstein: You assured me that this Queen was some powerful sorceress.

Evil Queen: I will not use magic for evil.

Jefferson: Well, if you want your fiance back, then you’re going to have to find someone who will.

Frankenstein: Have I wasted my time here?

Evil Queen: No. I know exactly who can help us. I know where to get a heart.

–[Real World]–

(Regina is still investigating the abandoned psych ward.)

Regina: Dr. Whale?

(She comes to an autopsy room that appears to have been trashed. The lights are flickering on and off, and there’s a trolley with a bloody sheet over it. She lifts the sheet and discovers a severed arm. After Regina recovers from the shock, she pushes the trolley aside to find Dr. Whale sprawled on the ground and missing his arm.)

Regina: Whale? Whale? I know you took Daniel’s body and you took one of my hearts. Why? Why?! Did you bring him back?

Dr. Whale: I did it.

Regina: He’s alive?

Dr. Whale: Yes. I brought him back but… He’s not Daniel.

Regina: What?

Dr. Whale: He’s… He’s a monster.

–[Fairy Tale World]–

(At the castle, the Evil Queen, Jefferson, and Frankenstein are standing in front of a large fireplace.)

Evil Queen: This… Was my mother’s.

Frankenstein: How sweet. But I’m not interested in heirlooms.

Evil Queen: Oh, I believe you will be. Listen.

Frankenstein: To a fireplace?

Evil Queen: Just listen.

(Gradually, the faint sound of beating hearts can be heard.)

Jefferson: Where is that coming from?

Evil Queen: Her vault.

(The Evil Queen magically transforms the fireplace into an entrance, and the three of them enter the vault. Inside, she leads them to a room, where the walls are lined with boxes containing hearts.)

Evil Queen: Take your pick.

Frankenstein: These are all hearts?

Evil Queen: My mother was a collector.

Jefferson: Whose hearts are these?

Evil Queen: I have no idea. She took so many, caused so much pain. It was impossible to keep track. She was a monster.

(Frankenstein pulls out one of the boxes from the wall. He opens the lid and peers down at the heart.)

Frankenstein: Finally. After all this time. It’s perfect.

–[Real World]–

(Regina is standing outside of Dr. Whale’s room at the hospital. David arrives.)

David: What’s going on? I just got a call that Dr. Whale was attacked.

Regina: You’ll have to ask his doctors.

David: No. I am asking you.

Regina: I came here to speak with him and discovered he was hurt. It’s the truth!

David: What else? What did you come here to speak with him about?

Regina: Someone from my past. I believe he’s come back. Daniel – his name is Daniel.

David: The man you were supposed to marry. Snow told me what happened and… How it was her fault that he died.

Regina: Yes, he did.

David: Well, then how could he be back?

Regina: Whale. He believed he could bring him back from the grave and… I don’t know how… But he has.

David: You don’t know how? Guess.

Regina: He practices something more powerful than magic. Or, so I was told. All he needed was a heart, and he took one of mine.

David: You have hearts here?

Regina: In my vault. From our land.

David: Whose heart did he take?

Regina: I have no idea. I took so many, it was impossible to keep track. I need to go. I have to help him.

David: No. Where is he? Look what he did – he’s dangerous.

Regina: Not to me. He won’t hurt anyone else, David, I promise.

David: You know I can’t take that chance. You have two choices Regina – tell me where he is, or jail.

Regina: I think it’s like when you awoke from your coma. He’s following his final thoughts to where he last met me – the stables.

David: No. Henry. Henry’s at the stables.

———–

(At the stables, Henry is brushing his horse in one of the stalls.)

Henry: Gramps says that you’ll tell me when I’m ready to ride you. So… Anytime. Like, soon?

(Suddenly, the horses become spooked. Henry’s horse pushes Henry to the ground and runs off. Daniel then enters the stall.)

–[Present Fairy Tale World]–

(Mulan ties Hook to a tree in the woods, while Emma, Mary Margaret, and Aurora stand by.)

Hook: I already told you. I’m just a blacksmith.

Emma: Sure you are.

(Emma whistles.)

Emma: You don’t want to talk to us? Maybe, you’ll talk to the ogres while they rip you limb from limb.

(The ogres can be heard approaching.)

Emma: Come on.

(The three of them go to leave, but Hook calls out to them.)

Hook: You… You can’t just leave me here like this!

Aurora: What if he’s telling the truth?

Emma: He’s not.

Hook: Good for you! You bested me. I can count the amount of people who’ve done that on one hand.

Emma: That supposed to be funny? Who are you?

Hook: Killian Jones, but most people have taken to call me by my more colourful moniker – Hook.

MMB: Hook…

Hook: Check my satchel.

Emma: As in, Captain Hook?

Hook: Ah, so you’ve heard of me.

Emma: You better hurry up. They’re getting closer. So, unless you want to be dinner, you better start talking.

Hook: Cora wanted me to gain your trust, so I could learn everything there is to know about your Storybrooke. She didn’t want any surprises when she finally got over there.

Emma: She can’t get there. We destroyed the wardrobe.

Hook: Ah, but the enchantment remains. Cora gathered the ashes. She’s going to use them to open up a portal. Now, if you’ll kindly cut me loose.

Mulan: No. We should leave him here to die. To pay for all the lives that he took.

Hook: That was Cora, not me.

Emma: Let’s go.

(Once again, the three turn to go, but Hook stops them.)

Hook: Wait. Wait! You need me alive.

Emma: Why?

Hook: Because we both want the same thing – to get back to your land.

Emma: You would say anything to save yourself. Why are we supposed to believe you now?

Hook: I arranged for transport with Cora. But, seeing how resourceful you are, I’ll offer you the same deal. I’ll help you, if you promise to take me along.

Emma: How are you going to help us get home?

Hook: The ashes will open a portal, but, to find your land, she needs more. There’s an enchanted compass. Cora seeks it. I’ll help you obtain it before she does.

Emma: So, Cora won’t make it to Storybrooke, and we’ll be one step closer to getting home.

MMB: Sounds too good to be true.

Hook: There’s only one way to find out.

Emma: You tell me one thing, and whatever you say, I better believe it – why does Captain Hook want to go to Storybrooke?

Hook: To exact revenge on the man who took my hand… Rumpelstiltskin.

–[Real World]–

(Henry and Daniel are still at the stables.)

Henry: You… You got to stop. You’re… You’re scaring the horses. A-Are… Are you hurt? Can I help you?

(Henry extends his hand towards Daniel, which causes him to have a flashback to when Cora ripped out his heart.)

Henry: Let me help you.

(Daniel grabs Henry by the neck and lifts him off the ground. Regina and David arrive.)

Regina: Daniel! Let him go!

(Daniel drops Henry to the ground, and David quickly pulls him out of the stall.)

David: Are you okay?

Henry: Yeah.

David: Go. Go!

(Henry exits. Regina is still staring at Daniel.)

Regina: It’s true. You’re really here.

(Daniel lunges for Regina, but David pushes her out of the way. David then shuts the door of the stall and locks it. Daniel furiously beats on the door.)

David: It won’t hold for long. Can you cast a spell to subdue him?

Regina: No, I won’t use magic on him.

(David draws his gun.)

Regina: What do you think you’re doing?!

David: He’s a monster, Regina! If you won’t put him down, I will!

Regina: David, please! Just let me talk to him.

(Regina tries to physically restrain David.)

David: It’s too big of a risk. There’s no telling what he’ll do.

Regina: You have to at least give me a chance!

David: Out of the way, Regina! Now!

(He pushes Regina aside, but she is relentless and, again, tries to physically stop David.)

Regina: No! I won’t let you hurt him! He’ll listen to me! Please! Let me talk to my fiance.

–[Fairy Tale World]–

(During a thunderstorm, Frankenstein has set up a tent in the middle of a field in order to do his experiment. Daniel’s body lies inside. Jefferson and the Evil Queen wait outside, until Frankenstein comes to fetch the heart.)

Frankenstein: The heart, Your Majesty.

(She hands him the box containing the heart.)

Frankenstein: Thank you. Now please – wait here. The procedure is one I must perform alone.

(Frankenstein goes back into the tent to begin the procedure. The Evil Queen and Jefferson watch the shadows through the tent.)

Evil Queen: What’s he doing back there? Magic?

Jefferson: He says he wields power greater than magic.

Evil Queen: Really? Why won’t he let us see?

Jefferson: In his land, there’s much we don’t understand. Or can’t. If he can’t achieve what you seek, Rumpelstiltskin was right. It can’t be done.

(Lightning crashes, and Frankenstein appears to plunge the heart into Daniel’s body. He exits the tent.)

Evil Queen: Well?

Frankenstein: I’m sorry. I failed. The heart wasn’t strong enough. It couldn’t withstand the procedure.

–[Real World]–

(Regina unlocks the door to the stall. Inside, Daniel has seemingly calmed down. He slowly approaches Regina and brings his hand up to cup her face, but, instead, he grabs her by the neck. He slams her against the wall just outside the stall.)

Regina: Daniel… Stop. It’s me. I love you…

(Something inside Daniel changes, and he lets go of her neck.)

Daniel: Regina…

Regina: Daniel…

(They hug.)

Regina: I can’t believe it’s really you.

(Suddenly, Daniel grimaces in pain.)

Regina: Daniel?

Daniel: Stop. Just stop the pain.

Regina: How?

Daniel: Let me go.

Regina: No. No, I won’t lose you again. Without you, I’m lost.

(Daniel, again, grimaces in pain.)

Regina: Daniel. Daniel, come back to me.

Daniel: Can’t…

Regina: But I love you.

Daniel: Then love again.

(Something inside Daniel changes again, and he turns back to his ‘monster’ state. He starts to go for Regina, but she stops him with magic. Hesitating, she then magically turns him to dust.)

Regina: Goodbye, Daniel.

–[Present Fairy Tale World]–

(Emma and company are traveling through the forest with Hook in tow.)

Hook: Up ahead. We’ll find the compass just over the ridge.

MMB: Do you get the feeling he’s leading us exactly where Cora wants us? That this whole thing’s a trap?

Emma: It’s definitely a trap. As long as we know they’re trying to play us, we can-

MMB: Stay one step ahead of them.

Emma: Exactly.

(They come to the edge of the forest, where they see a beanstalk in the distance.)

Emma: Let me guess – the compass is up there?

Hook: Oh, yeah.

Emma: So, how do we get to it?

Hook: It’s not the climb you need to worry about. It’s the giant at the top.

–[Real World]–

(Still upset, Regina parks her car outside of Archie’s office.)

–[Fairy Tale World]–

(The Evil Queen comes across Rumpelstiltskin and his new apprentice practicing in the forest.)

Evil Queen: Who’s this?

Rumpelstiltskin: Ah, your replacement, of course. I needed someone more dedicated.

Evil Queen: Dedicated?

(The Evil Queen magically rips out the new apprentice’s heart and crushes it to dust in her hand.)

Rumpelstiltskin: Now… Where were we?

–[Real World]–

(Regina knocks on the door to Archie’s office. He answers.)

Archie: You’re back.

Regina: I used magic.

Archie: Why don’t you come in and tell me what happened?

–[Fairy Tale World]–

(Jefferson is leading Frankenstein through the woods, until they reach their destination.)

Frankenstein: Enough. I need to be taken home. Now, I have work to do, and I believe our deal is done.

Jefferson: The deal isn’t done until he says it’s done.

(Rumpelstiltskin arrives.)

Rumpelstiltskin: Now, now. Patience, please. Our transaction is, uh, nearly complete.

Frankenstein: And are you satisfied with the results?

Rumpelstiltskin: She did seem rather… Heartbroken.

Frankenstein: She is. She bought my failure.

Jefferson: You should’ve seen her tears.

Rumpelstiltskin: I’ve seen the aftermath. Impressive.

Frankenstein: Now… My property.

Jefferson: Yeah, here it is.

(Jefferson hands him a box containing a heart.)

Frankenstein: You’ll excuse me if I check.

(Frankenstein opens the lid to find the heart beating inside.)

Frankenstein: It’s been a pleasure doing business with you.

Rumpelstiltskin: Oh, the pleasure was mine. Thanks to your efforts, I’ve made my monster. Now, I do hope you’ll be able to make yours.

Frankenstein: I’m not making a monster.

Rumpelstiltskin: Sure you’re not. Good luck.

Frankenstein: If these hearts are as strong as you say, I won’t need luck.

Rumpelstiltskin: Oh, just magic.

Frankenstein: No. What I’m going to accomplish goes far beyond magic.

Rumpelstiltskin: And yet, you need a magical heart to do it.

Frankenstein: So small minded. I need my powers to transcend the limitations of your magic.

Rumpelstiltskin: This must be quite a land you hail from if you think your abilities are more powerful.

Frankenstein: They are.

Rumpelstiltskin: Care to wager? I suspect, someday, you’ll see it my way.

Frankenstein: I doubt it. Now, may we go?

Rumpelstiltskin: Careful, dearie. Just remember – whatever it is you traffic in, it comes with a price.

(Jefferson throws his hat on the ground, forming a purple vortex.)

Frankenstein: We’ll see.

(Jefferson and Frankenstein jump into the portal.)

–[Real World]–

(Dr. Whale enters Mr. Gold’s Pawn Shop with a cooler containing his severed arm.)

Mr. Gold: When they say I charge an arm and a leg, that’s meant as a figure of speech.

Dr. Whale: Put it back.

Mr. Gold: You want me to reattach your arm?

Dr. Whale: Can you do it?

Mr. Gold: Of course. But first, tell me why.

Dr. Whale: Because I want to use it again.

Mr. Gold: Obviously. I meant, why bring that stable boy back from the dead? Why now?

Dr. Whale: I thought… I thought that if I helped her, she would return me to my world. I want to see my brother – to try to bring him back again.

Mr. Gold: Again?

Dr. Whale: The first time ended badly. I need to return and try it once more.

Mr. Gold: Well, it seems that’s rather beyond her abilities. My condolences.

Dr. Whale: Now, my arm. You said you can do it.

Mr. Gold: Oh, yes. But there’s a difference between can, and will.

Dr. Whale: Name your price.

Mr. Gold: Say it.

Dr. Whale: Say what?

Mr. Gold: You know what. You came here, not the hospital. So say it.

Dr. Whale: I need magic.

Mr. Gold: That’s all I needed to hear.

(Mr. Gold waves his hand, and Dr. Whale’s arm magically reattaches.)

Mr. Gold: Always a pleasure doing business with you, uh, Victor.

–[Fairy Tale World]–

(Frankenstein has returned to his realm with the heart. He enters his castle as a thunderstorm rages outside. Inside, he finds his assistant waiting for him in the lab. A body covered by a blanket sits in the middle.)

Igor: Doctor. You’ve returned. Did you find what you were looking for?

Frankenstein: Yes.

(He takes the heart out of the box and holds it up.)

Frankenstein: Look at it. It’s remarkable, isn’t it?

Igor: The final piece to the puzzle.

Frankenstein: I believe so. Let’s begin.

(Frankenstein starts the experiment. He harnesses the electricity from the lighting and channels it towards the body on the table. Slowly, the body begins to raise its hand.)

Frankenstein: It’s alive.

Igor: You did it. Victor, you did it.

(Frankenstein clasps the extended hand.)

Frankenstein: Yes. I believe I have. Welcome back, brother.

Igor: It’s magic, Dr. Frankenstein.

Frankenstein: No, not magic. Science.
