At Heart, You're a Doer
You're a seat-of-the-pants type who's definitely more of a doer than a planner. You plunge right into whatever comes your way. Your energy and zeal are obvious advantages. You get things done with enthusiastic efficiency.People like you "value excitement, high energy, and the thrill of making things happen," says time management coach Bill Cole, whose California-based firm, Procoach Systems, offers solutions for peak performance in business, sports, and life. "They like to work off instinct, emotion, and intuition. Either consciously or unconsciously, they're thinking 'I'm too busy to stop and think.'"Cole believes that most people develop their habits as planners or doers in childhood. Perhaps your parents were highly energetic, or your natural temperament lends itself to zooming around at warp speed. However, now that you're an adult, you might find that your tendency to plunge right in without planning can lead to problems. You might find halfway through a project that your initial enthusiasm fades when things don't go smoothly. You may be tempted not to finish the job.To add more balance to your life, try slowing down -- with decisions, projects, and people. "To do more, do less," says Cole. "Achievers do not add more to their to-do list as openings come up. They maintain breathing spaces so they can recover and operate optimally more often."Time management experts differentiate between "efficiency," which is doing the job right, and "effectiveness," which is doing the right job. Effectiveness requires taking time to plan. Planning can help you organize not only your activities and appointments, but also your goals and priorities.Once you are focused on the right projects for you and your life goals, you will see that your interest does not wane as the project becomes more intricate. Rather than leaping into an overwhelming task that will ultimately frustrate you, plan by simplifying the idea so that you can complete the entire thing in the time frame you had in mind. Do the same with day-to-day issues, such as meeting the neighbors or planning meals or menus on trips: Take time -- but not too much time -- to get the job done in a time frame that's appropriate for that task or decision.

You Plan. You Execute. Go Girl!
You're a Planner and Shaker who is also very adept at executing. Pat yourself on the back! You know how to avoid the pitfalls of both the extreme planner's lack of doing and the extreme doer's lack of planning. You make a point of keeping your activities in line with your values."People who plan and then do have a nice little balance," says Rita Emmett, author of The Procrastinator's Handbook (Walker, 2000). "That's what we all strive for."Time management coach Bill Cole, whose California-based firm, Procoach Systems, offers solutions for peak performance in business, sports, and life, believes that being in the middle of the planner-to-doer spectrum gives you the most options for flexibility and control. Extreme planners and extreme doers, on the other hand, are unable to shift gears because they are either too stuck in the future or too busy rushing around. You, on the other hand, are in a good position to achieve "peak performance," a state also known as "the flow" or "the zone" in which everything clicks together. In this state, you feel in control without being controlling. You're "working out of intention rather than reaction," says Cole.Yet, while this combination of planning and doing is undoubtedly ideal, some women spend so much time planning and doing for others, they have little time left for themselves. To continue on your optimal path of dreaming and planning, planning and doing, take time to assess each day's activities. Which went as you wished? Which could go more smoothly next time around? Checking in with yourself for just a few moments each day, Cole says, can go a long way toward maintaining self-confidence and setting a doable agenda on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. From these habits, which you've already formulated, comes a life of richness and riches.
