Say It Ain’t So! Lucy Hale Says The Liars Will ‘Go Their Own Separate Ways’ In Season 6
“Pretty Little Liars” is jumping ahead in season six, and no one is more excited than Lucy Hale. Honestly, if we had to wear Aria’s ~ eccentric ~ wardrobe on a daily basis, we’d be pretty excited too.
“For the first time, we get to venture out of high school, we get to grow up a little bit,” Hale told People. “We haven’t shot these episodes yet, but we’re doing hopefully a significant time jump. So just to see if the girls are dealing with the same issues, if A is still around, how much they’ve grown up. ”
How significant? Four years, to be exact. MTV News confirmed the four-year flash forward with executive producer Joseph Dougherty back in March. “We always knew that we were going to reach a point where we finish the story and then we’re going to catch our breath and take this opportunity to move forward — literally,” he said. “Reboot is the word that gets thrown around.”

Outside of Rosewood, a lot can happen in four years — college, careers, breakups and even marriages. The EPs have already teased that one little Liar may be hitched when we see her in the season six winter premiere. While Hale wouldn’t spill the deets on whether Aria is the one walking down the aisle, she did tell People that she would love to see Aria in a serious, committed relationship with… a pet.
“I’m curious to see how Aria is going to dress, what her job is, does she have pets? I want her to have a pet really bad!” Is that, uh, pet named Ezra per chance?
If there’s one thing we want for Aria in the future, it’s for her to focus on her creative passion: writing. While its rare for a 21-year-old to take the publishing world by storm with a successful debut novel, it’s not entirely unheard of. We know Aria is capable of writing an epic love story — and she doesn’t even need four years at Talmadge College to prove it. It would be pretty great to see Aria putting herself, and not some guy, first for a change. She could finally be her own (better-dressed) heroine!
As hyped as we are to see the Liars a little older and in new environments, it will come at a cost: their friendship. “It’s just cool to see how they’ve evolved,” Hale said. “From my knowledge, they’re going to go their own separate ways for a little bit.”
Knowing that the Liars won’t be as close as they were in high school bums us out, but this wouldn’t be the first time they’ve endured a falling out. In fact, the entire series began with the Liars reconnecting after a year apart, so this won’t be any different. We’re pretty confident the Liars put that second “F” in BFFs.
