Is it possible to do curls without heat?

Ok.......so I've heard if আপনি heat your hair it can really damage your hair,and I don't want to get my hair damage!So......I want my hair to look like in the picture below.But if I NEED to heat my hair with a curling iron WITHOUT DAMAGING MY HAIR TO Much.Then,that would be great!
P.S my hair is layered it's like 6-8inches past my shoulders,AND I DO HAVE BANGS that are like about up to my chin,my hair is black and it's really staright.
