Ended up on youtube and watching an awesome vid with scenes of Severus and Lily from childhood, death, redemption, 'Always', and 'Look at me'.....and was just too too touching...then got in the truck and heard this song on the way home.

I felt a little torn about including this song, until I read in the interpretations that Bono himself said this song was also about the love people share, which is how I viewed it. I tend to shy away from overly religious themes.

You know, I've talked about other character favs I had in the past (Spock, Jareth, Data....), but, HP was such a well written and expansive piece of work, then it branched out into an excellent movie franchise. I'm so glad I began the books before the movies came out, so I had a real understanding of Severus' character before the movies could put their interpretation before me. All thanks to JKR and Alan Rickman for giving us Severus Snape.

I am not a huge John Mayer fan. I got in my truck, heading home, and heard the last chorus of this song and had to search it on the net later to hear the whole thing. It just said it all about Severus for me today. Listened to it once or twice tonight already.

Can ya'll believe what we've accomplished?! Look at this phenominal list of truly awesome songs. Songs that all in some way or the other reminded us or made us think of Severus Snape. I've even left out the poetry quotes(I plan on gathering them and moving them to the poetry "The Long Journey" forum).

I think I've gathered them all. (If I've missed any, let me know what page and the song and I'll edit the list.)

Reading back through the offerings as I put this list together, I was reminded again of what great music is out there. And I especially loved the visual travel through the fan art and clips that everyone added.

I just love this forum all over again. Thanks and kudos to everyone that has participated. And I hope we lure others to posting as well. I love music and all it can symbolize.

I heard this on Glee tonight and I couldn't help but think of Severus striding through the halls. So many different lines from this song reminded me of him.

And, especially that part about -
"Oh my child, you'll never know just what you mean to me,

I kept remembering that speech Severus gave Dumbledore, about lying for him, spying for him, all to save Lily's child, and then finding out that Harry has to die.

And the rest of it, just kind of echos Severus' relationship with his students, what he had to do, lying and spying.

The lines I've italacized and bolded make me think of the final confrontation between Harry and Tom Riddle, when they're circling each other and Harry's telling him that (basically) Severus and Dumbledore tricked him. It has been said that the only thing Tom Riddle feared was death, and an ignominious one at that. But I don't think that's wholly accurate. I think there was something else he feared, and that was being betrayed by someone closest to him. I think deep inside he was terrified that Severus had betrayed him somehow, or would betray him, and I think the screenwriters got it right in their version of The Prince's Tale, when Dumbledore told Severus that he had to be the one to kill him, because only then would Voldemort truly trust him. I think Riddle really was terrified in his last few minutes, because here's Harry Potter alive and taunting him, and he's survived the Killing Curse for a third time. I think the realization struck him, and struck him deep, when Harry stated that Severus had loved Lily his whole life that the only way Harry could have survived everything was if Severus had been protecting him all along. I think the horror for Riddle wasn't just that someone he trusted had betrayed him, but that he had been fooled. Oh yes. Severus Snape had played his role quite well.

@BlackHound: I love your analysis of Tom's fears. But as I'm really superficial, I also love "Twilight Zone!" As soon as I saw that you posted it, the video started playing in my mind. It is such a fun song.

@jester: LOL! And thank you. Another scene from DH2 that frequently rolls in my head when I think of this stuff is in the boathouse, when Riddle tells him, "only I can live forever." The look on Severus' face makes me feel that it clicked for him, that statement & what Dumbledore had told him about Riddle keeping the snake close to him.

@karenmiller: The Simpsons have used "Radar Love" at least twice that I can think of. So that being another obsession of mine, I watched the one episode that I could quickly find. (In case you're wondering, it's the one where Bart gets a driver's license and goes on spring break!)

@BH: I shamefully admit that I don't know the band nor song that needed no introduction!! However, if you know any obscure 1-hit wonders from the 70's and 80's, I'm all over it!

@Jester - the song is from Evanescence with assist from Paul McCoy from 12 Stones. I love this song. The emotion in it is sometimes overwhelming depending on the mood you are in. Its more of a recent song. If you've every heard Amy Lee from Evanescence, she has some power with her voice.

And you know, it was so touching that even with Lily married to James, Severus wanted her saved. Her, her son, James, all of them. Save them, Hide them. I've read many a fic, where they imply that Severus realizes he did no truly 'love' Lily and he moves on and 'truly' falls in love with someone else. (don't get me wrong, many of them are very good and well written) But, I'm always reminded that, true love for someone, you want them to be happy, whether that is away from you or not. You want them to be safe, to be happy. And that moment when he begs Albus to save her, to save all of them. Reading the books, that was only one of the moments that truly told me about Severus snape. He loved Lily.

Heard this last night and just went, OMG! That was Severus for Lily. His Deatheater comrades probably didn't except his relationship with Lily, but he didn't give it up. Quite frankly, people that knew them both, probably didn't understand or support them even being friends. And Albus, who had know him from his childhood and all his life, even Albus didn't seem to understand his love of Lily. The movie caught Albus' surprise and questioning when Severus showed his Patronus, After all this time? And Severus still replied, "Always."

And at the end, his emotional 'scars' are revealed for Harry to see.

I can't even go into how almost every verse of this song just touched me so much.

I guess it a tribute to love that I feel today. And, Severus just symbolizes that for me. Its easy to love someone that loves you back. That, well, that is easy and immediately rewarding. But, to love someone that no longer speaks to you. It love someone that does not love you back the way you want. To love someone so much that their happiness and safety, no matter how much their choices may hurt you, is more important than anything. Real love, in the face of that, well, .....

As I said, guess I just felt the need to pay tribute to his enduring strength and love today.

All the way up to the end of reading the books, I kept hoping for my professor, that, if not love, at least friendship and acceptance would be his. Yes, his reasons for his actions, and his very own personality led him through his life, but, I wanted him to have some sort of closure. A HEA.
But, he always had to walk his path, protecting those that he left behind, there didn't seem to be one chance for him to have peace.

^ Me too :'(. I still hate not only that he dies but how he died. I wanted him to get closure in the end and then to start living. I remember reading the epilogue and still holding on the hope that somehow it would be revealed that Snape had survived after all. An that he too was on that platform seeing one of his children off to Hogwarts...

I made myself cry with the Simon and Garfunkel song. It brought to my mind that image of Snape standing all alone looking down at the students, so I just had to hunt for that image and post it along with the lyrics

I remember hearing this song before I first saw The Breakfast Club. It struck a chord with me and so many of my friends at the time. To me it captures what it felt like to be young, in love, and with a broken heart. I thought I was all song-ed out, but something about I Am a Rock triggered this. So thanks!

I loooove The Breakfast Club! I had this crush on Judd Nelson's character Bender for what seemed the longest time. Note the hair, the nose and snarkiness. It's like I was in training for my future appreciation of Snape :-)
