I just think that Dean has made WAY more sacrafices for Sam.

Dean has spent his entire life looking after Sammy. I'm not completely sure that this makes him the 'better' brother I recon that Sammy would have done the same if their roles had been reversed!
But like everybody said Dean made that extreme sacrifice of going to hell for Sammy. But again Sammy said he wold do it for Dean if he had to.
Ok so maybe I think that they are both just as awesome as each other and I'm having a really indecisive moment right now.

They are both awesome brothers. But I am more partial to Dean and going to hell for four months is a bit different than trying to save someone.

Dean by far, because going to hell isn't the first sacrifice he's made for Sammy. He subjugated his whole life to look after his brother. And although Sam said he'd do anything for Dean- he never DID it. Sure Dean said he didn't want him to use his powers but Dean knew that Sam wouldn't want him to go to hell for him and he sold his soul anyway. Plus, in third season, all Sam had to do was try to welch out of the deal. Then he'd be dead and Dean would be off the hook.

Uh, Dean DID die. Sam waited until it was too late before he actually did anything (trying to make a deal, open the Devil's Gate, etc.). AND he gave up after only 4 months (probably less) and started gunning for revenge instead of trying to save Dean. Did he ever once stop to think that all the demons he was exorcising would probably, once they got to hell, go straight for his brother?

Dean does all the heavy lifting while Sammy just emotes. I mean I love Sam, but Dean really has to like, do EVERYTHING for him. And now he apparently has to save him again. And I think it's time Sam starts showing a little more appreciation.

Sam is sort of selfish .. I mean he went to college and left Dean. he didn't even talk to him for two years! that must have crushed Dean. and then he didn't want to leave to help Dean find their dad in the first place. then he left Dean for Cali. AGAIN! (even if he did come back) and then he lets Dean go to hell for him, starts sleeping with Ruby and using his evil demon powers?! =| after EVERYTHING that Dean has sacraficed for him, he has the nerve to team up with Ruby? and then say that DEAN is the one who looks at him like he's a freak or an idiot?! nugh.

Totally agree with you all. The reason why Dean does more for Sam though, comes back to the fact Dean thinks he is worthless and that his whole reason for being is to look after his weee bro. Sam does not have the same problem, he's never felt unloved (by his father) or worthless (at least not in the same way or to the same extent that Dean does). Because of this, Dean just jumps into things without thinking about himself - he is so one tracked - when he's trying to save someone all he's thinking is "i have to save them" cause to him his life doesn't matter ]=

True, SG1-090, he has been conditioned to think he's worthless. Although I think this season, he's feeling a little better about himself. But regardless of how the brothers came to be the way they are, I do think Dean is more selfless than Sam. Not to bash Sam or anything, but I just thought of another example of how selfish he can be. In A Very Supernatural Christmas, Dean asks Sam to do Christmas and Sam just says no because it's painful for HIM. It takes him forever to subjugate his own feelings on the matter and do it for Dean. And the memory of their childhood Christmas just shows how Dean tried so hard to give Sam a childhood. And it took Sam all those years to reciprocate. I agree with blackdoggy1, Sam could show a little more appreciation for his brother!

Any demon the Winchesters had pissed off or that Sammy exorcised, their number one priority once they were in Hell would be to go and hunt Dean down to have their go at torturing him!
I'm not sure that Sammy ever felt truly loved by his farther until they found him again. I don't think that John was around enough for Sammy to feel that he was love (AVSC for example). For Sammy Dean was the obvious substitute for John. Dean however didn't have anyone to look after him or take on the role of 'farther figure' and that is why Dean felt more "worthless" than Sammy. Especially after Sammy left him to go to college and then John abandoning him for a hunt.
Ok I think I've lost the thread of where I was going.
Erm... I think I wanted to say that because of these abandonment issues (that demons keep bringing up and using against him) and the need for his family Dean is a more, I want to say loyal but that's not the right word, I guess it makes him the "better brother".

I love my little brother and sisters and I know I wouldn't even think about it if it saved their lives I would go to hell. I would rather suffer and know that their alright.
