Although I'm not sure how successful it would have been since he didn't have the Colt at that time. Would Azazel have settled just for John's soul? Or John could have gone to the crossroads demon instead.

But I think Sam would have been more likely to have done something like that, esp. since they couldn't reach John at the time.

He'd have been willing, but I'm not sure how he'd have gone about it since he didn't have the Colt at the time. In IMTOD, John originally offers up the Colt/quitting hunting Azazel specifically, but is then asked to sell his soul as well. Maybe it'd depend on how aware he was of the possibility of crossroad deals? Sam and Dean hadn't come across those before season 2, but maybe that'd been something John had come across and hid from them.
