what if God isn't really gone? what if he sees everything that is happening? He favors humans over angels, right? and most of the angels are bitter over this as we know by now...maybe He wants to humanize them to be more like his favorites and Cas is one of the few (or many) who are doing exactly what He wants..
maybe He knows that it won't be the jealous angels or hell that will win, but the humanized angels (and other members of team Winchester) cos they're the only ones who truly understand what humanity is about and are willing to fight for it the hardest..

It would explain God's absence- He's testing His angels. And I think there must be other angels out there like Castiel and Anna, who are in touch with their humanity. But it's interesting- the humane angels are the ones who have lost faith, who are filled with doubt. But then that is a human trait and if He's trying to teach the angels to be more human, they must first learn to think for themselves. In essence, they must turn their back on God in order to learn the lesson He's teaching them. But after all is said and done, will God reveal Himself as orchestrator? And if He does, will the humane angels forgive Him? With their reverence for human life and new found independent thought and ability to question authority, will they see Him as a traitor? Because if He is just standing by and watching, then He really is the one responsible for any and all human deaths that will occur as a result of the apocalypse. It would mean He's playing a game, just like Zachariah, sacrificin human lives for His own purposes, regardless of who He knows will win in the end.

Great question, Lucy!! And great answer, fanfly!! Wow, it's so hard to know, or even guess, what Kripke has in mind about the God issue. Personally I think if there's an ultimate evil, there has to be an ultimate good as well. Maybe God is biding His time, for exactly the reasons you say, and the bad angels are taking this as a sign of indifference. They became bold enough to try to take the Earth for their own. I think they're in for one heck of a surprise before the end! :))
