Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part Two,
left off and, because basically nothing of interest happened in that last movie, there\'s a lot to pack in. And while this time around the movie is pretty much in keeping with the book it\'s based on — i.e. no unnecessary TWENTY MINUTE LONG ABSEILING-IN-THE-DARK RESCUE SCENES — there are some key changes to the YA canon, and one moment that will have you making your best omg face, and then squealing with glee.
There are also lots of expository moments watering down the more complicated plot points for moviegoers not super familiar with the books: it\'s Gale\'s bomb; Coin is evil; Snow is also evil but dying already etc. etc.
Here\'s a breakdown of the differences you\'ll maybe notice even when you\'re all caught up in Peeta\'s pouting, and there will also be Peeta GIFs just because, well, Peeta GIFS.
*MANY SPOILERS AHEAD. DO NOT READ ON IF YOU ARE NOT PREPARED FOR THIS*
Speaking of the boy with the bread, in the early scenes where he\'s being rehabilitated from the tracker jacker venom and assorted other tortures the Capitol inflicted upon him, Prim takes the place of Delly Cartwright, who is, in the books, a random District 12 friend friend of his and Katniss.
And speaking of his opponent in the whole Games love triangle, here is a direct quote from notes we scribbled during a screening of the movie: Gale acts like even more of a fuckboi than usual.
When he and Katniss aren\'t blowing shit up in District 2 (this scene plays out just as it does in the books, with Gwendoline \'Brienne of Tarth\' Christie\'s Commander Lyme criminally underutilised) he\'s complaining about how Peeta is a better person than he is yadda yadda. It\'s all true; still, shut up Gale!
In the aftermath of that whole District 2 mine-bombing scene, we cut to the Capitol with President Snow hosting an extravagant dinner for his faves. He has one of his advisers, Antonius, killed and that\'s new because Antonius isn\'t even a character in the books, but there you go, any sassy Snow moment is a good one. (There is a character by the name of Dr. Antonius in the books, but none of this otherwise.)
All the scenes of Katniss, Finnick, Johanna et al training in District 13 for their Capitol missions are cut entirely, probably because District 13 is BORING.
There we said it. Instead, in order to get to the Capitol for her "assassinate Snow" plan, Katniss somehow sneaks onto a cargo plane packed with weapons for the rebels already mounting the attack there undetected (Johanna, who does get a good few salty victor moments, tips her off).
Here\'s another direct quote from our notes: Castor is a hottie. He still dies like he does in the books, womp womp, as do all the rest of Katniss\'s squad, with the slight exception of Leeg 2, who still dies but out of sync with her demise in the books.
The sewer scenes which kill off most of said squad, Castor included, are epic, and some of the best intense visuals in the movie. Anyway, this is a picture of him, or Wes Chatham, the actor who plays him:
According to his Instagram bio, Chatham is also a professional dodgeball player. Perfect!
Back to the movie, and perhaps unsurprisingly, the scene where Katniss kills a member of the Capitol when seeking refuge in her apartment building doesn\'t feature at all. Former stylist and literal cat lady Tigris does pop up however to offer some shelter and a saucer of warm milk though, and she is STUNNING.
When Katniss and Gale make their final assault on Snow\'s mansion, there are no more pods going off (as in the book, when things are gone to shit like no other). Instead, a "cleaner" battle plays out between the Capitol\'s peacekeepers and the rebels, though Kale are still stuck in the middle.
It ends, as noted above, with those parachute bombs, the rebel medics (including sister Prim) and then… TEARS. ALL OF OUR TEARS. But seriously, that moment is not as emotional as you might expect, because it all happens so fast.
All the execution messiness with Snow and Coin plays out just as in the book, but Lieutenant (later President) Paylor does get a larger role in the proceedings — as she does throughout the movie, popping up for motivational speeches here and there. This is because Patina Miller is a great actress, and hey, it\'s also a welcome instance of diverse casting (Paylor is described as having dark eyes and hair in the books, but with no race specified; remember that whole Rue debacle?).
In the aftermath of said execution, though, Katniss gets a letter from Plutarch confirming her freedom/exile from the Capitol. In the book, she and Haymitch met with him for the big post-morten debrief, but this was a scene cut because of Phillip Seymour Hoffman\'s death —
As the movie closes back in District 12 with the happy Peeniss family frolicking in a field, Katniss does not sing Rue\'s Lullaby to her baby as she does in the book. This is a missed opportunity, but still she chose Peeta and who even cares what happened to Gale. (We do not.)
Did we mention also that when Peeta returns to District 12 he plants Katniss a bed of PRIMROSES my gosh Peeta is perfect Peeta bake me a cake right now/always and forever please.
Oh, and also in the biggest, craziest, most fanfic-inducing moment of all, EFFIE AND HAYMITCH KISS. THEY KISS!! At first it\'s on the cheek and you\'re like "aww" and then it\'s on the mouth and you\'re like "yay." Effie shows off a few more beautiful couture looks this movie, but this is her big moment.
Hayfie also promise "not to be strangers" even as Haymitch leaves for District 12 also, so yeah they\'ve been fucking since the Quarter Quell if not before.
