Twenty-two-year-old Carrie Culberson was last seen on August 28, 1996 in Blanchester, Ohio at approximately 11:30 p.m. when she was dropped off at her home after attending a volleyball game with two of her friends. One of Carrie's neighbors said that Carrie left her house in her red 1989 Honda CRX a few minutes after she came home.

At the time of her disappearance, Carrie was in an abusive relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Vincent Doan. In the summer of 1996, Carrie filed assault charges against Vincent after he allegedly hit her on the head with a space heater which required her to have five surgical staples to close the wound. Three days before her disappearance, her family told the police that Vincent abducted Carrie and held her at gunpoint for five hours before she convinced him to drive her home.

The night Carrie went missing, Vincent appeared at the volleyball game she attended and was angry with her because she refused to accompany him to court where had to appear on a traffic violation. Vincent wanted to drive Carrie home, but she tried to avoid being alone with him.

Carrie's family believed that she drove to Vincent's house after her friends dropped her off at home. At first, Vincent claimed that he hadn't seen Carrie, but later changed his story, saying that she arrived at his home at 12:30 a.m. on August 29, 1996 and honked the horn of her car, but he refused to speak to her. He later claimed that Carrie went to his house, he told her that he wasn't in love with her anymore and she drove off.

Due to Vincent constantly changing his story, he was considered the prime suspect in her disappearance. In 1997, he was charged for kidnapping and murdering Carrie. Despite maintaining his innocence, Vincent was sentenced to life in prison for Carrie's murder and nine years for kidnapping.

In 2001, Carrie's family won a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Blanchester and was paid two million dollars. Carrie's remains have not been located and her case is still classified as being an endangered missing person.
