The Vampire Diaries has enjoyed an uneven, but totally entertaining 2014. Though TVD started out the year with a bang in the form of its 100th episode, it dragged a bit in its exploration of the Traveler storyline, only to return in Season 6 with a renewed narrative energy. There were highs. There were lows. There was (so much) blood. In honor of that first one, we’re listing our 10 favorite scenes of 2014. Did your favorite TVD moment of 2014 make the list?
Klaroline’s forest rendezvous. The 100th episode of TVD was full of amazing moments, but nothing beats the moment when Caroline and Klaus finally give into their feelings for one another. Their tryst in the woods may have felt like an ending for some, but we’re banking on it as a beginning. (We hear the NOLA is lovely this time of year, Care.) Regardless, it was one of the best moments of 2014, and one a very long time in the making.
Caroline tells Tyler off. We could do an entire list dedicated to Caroline calling people out. (And we kind of have?) One of our favorite such moments came in Season 5, Episode 12 when Caroline yells at Tyler for continuing to shame her about sleeping with Klaus: “Yes, I slept with Klaus. But after you walked away from me. That was my choice and I\'m living with it and I don\'t need to be hearing about it every five seconds. So just get over it or get out of my life, but I\'m done feeling guilty." Epic.

Katherine says goodbye. No one does a death scene like Katherine. In her most recent (but, hopefully not final?), the villainess dropped truth bombs one-by-one on the TVD crew — for example, Caroline was cooler after Katherine turned her into a vamp, no one appreciates Matt, Damon needs to stop blaming others for his problems, etc. — before Stefan stabbed her. It’s rare to see the TVD cast all together in one scene, and this one was full of emotional weight. One of the things we love aboutTVD is it rarely forgets its history, and this scene proved that more than ever. And we love it (and Katherine) for it.
Steroline snuggles in the Traveler camp. TVD seems to be on the Steroline bandwagon, and we’re willing to see how the ship plays out, as long as we get more moments like this one when Stefan and Caroline fell asleep together while waiting in the Traveler camp. Subtle, real, and visually beautiful, this scene convinced us that a romantic Steroline might not be such a bad thing. In a series of less-than-stellar episodes, it also reminded us of what TVD looks like at it’s best: when it is grounding supernatural stakes and shenanigans in real, human emotion.
Damon and Bonnie blink out of existence. The final scene of Season 5 saw Bonnie and Damon clutching hands as the Other Side collapsed once and for all, seemingly ending their existences. (Spoiler: they survive!) The two may not have been the best of friends (at this point), but the way they found solace in being together was so touching. “Do you think it’ll hurt?” Bonnie asks Damon as they hold hands. “I don’t know-” Damon says as they disappear. What a way to end a season! And what a crazy, yet simple metaphor the craziness of an existence made better by companionship and love.
Bonnie gets her magic back. We love all of the Bonnie/Damon stuff in Season 6, but the moment when Bonnie gets her magic back in Episode 3 is awesome for so many reasons. One: it highlights the strength of the unexpected friendship between Bonnie and Damon, as she finds her magic again in order to save his life. Two: it is the cap on the re-introduction of Bonnie’s character as a total badass.
Damon returns from the dead. We are all about the sibling-ship between Damon and Stefan. It gets us every time. These two brothers have been together for a long time, and as Stefan says aloud to a crypt of his dead family members in Season 6, Episode 5, they are lost without one another. It was so fitting that Stefan be the first person Damon saw upon his return from Kai’s prison world, and their reunion was everything we could have hoped for: Damon saving a bottle of bourbon from Stefan’s grief, only to crack a joke about it. Stefan not believing his brother is actually back, only to embrace him with everything he has. M83. What more could you want from a scene?
Delena kiss in the rain. Delena has arguably been less compelling since they got together, but this flashback scene to happier times in their relationship proved that these two can be interesting even if they aren’t faced with some epic obstacle to overcome. In Season 6, Episode 7, Damon remembers kissing Elena in the rain — a moment she erased from her mind when she thought Damon was dead. “Promise me this is forever,” she demands in the flashback, and he agrees. This scene was seasons in the making, and a tribute to patient fans who have been demanding a Delena rain kiss since Season 1. Personally, we think it was worth the wait.
Kai hunts his siblings. Frankly, the entire Friendsgiving-themed episode of TVD was pure magic, but we have a special place in our heart for the opening scene, which sees Kai hunting his four-year-old siblings Liv and Luke through their house back in 1994. Horror isn’t usually our cup of tea, but this opener got us instantly invested in the Gemini coven storyline, marked the introduction of a scary villain on TVD again, and was just so darn scary. You win, TVD.
Bonnie arrives at the Gilbert house. Bonnie hasn’t always been the strongest of characters. She has been given the Heroine Selflessly Sacrifices Everything for Everyone plot too many times to count (including this season, don’t even get us started). But, for the most past, Bonnie’s Season 6 storyline has been phenomenal — dare we say, our favorite? The moment in Season 6, Episode 9 when Bonnie races up the Gilbert house steps in the prison world thinking she will finally get to go home only to realize she is too late is heartbreaking. Kat Graham deserves all of the awards for her quiet, strong, devastated portrayal of a Bonnie who slowly realizes the truth: she is alone. Throw in a shot of the now-destroyed Gilbert house as Bonnie cries on its front steps, and you have one of the most touching scenes of 2014.
