why cant edward read bella's mind? and wats a mental sheild?

coz she has a mental shield and a mental shield is something that blocks her mind, anything thats an illusion/pretend/ অথবা does something to her mind does not work yet anything physical can happen to her... thats why jane cant harm her aswell ;D
