If I was going to kill off a সেকেন্ড member of that coven in the first book/film, I'd choose Laurent. That way, Victoria can still return later to try to avenge her mate. Laurent's absence in future books/films would be less of an impact - it could actually be an improvement as the Cullens wouldn't know who the threat was in Eclipse.
