Jacob & Bella confusion!

This has nothing to do with the প্রণয় ত্রিভুজ অথবা anything like that -
In New moon, Bella and Jacob have this thing where they have made up ages for one another. In the event that one does something clever অথবা right অথবা whatever, আরো years are added to that age. I don't understand how this works & I don't understand the purpose of it either.
Could some please explain for me? Thanks.
