“Code Geass” Anime Series Brief Overview
The events of the anime series take place in the alternative world, where the chronology starts at 55 BC (0), the year of the establishment of the British Empire (Britannia). It was the time when Julius Caesar made an attempt to invade on the territory of the British Empire, but he met the resistance from the local tribes. Thus the difference between the Gregorian and British calendars is equal to 55 years.
The events of the first season depict the moment when the Holy British Empire declares war on Japan due to a long-term diplomatic conflict caused by a Japanese side. During this conflict, the British Empire first used their newest weapon known as “Knightmare Frame.” The Japanese army wasn’t able to resist such technologies and thus was defeated, whereupon has lost its sovereignty and was renamed into the “Area 11.” From now on, only the British are the noble persons, while the locals are called “Elevens.” Some citizens assemble in the groups of rebels, known as the “terrorists,” who attempt to retrieve the independence of Japan.
Seven years later, Lelouch Lamperouge, an exiled British successor has accidentally found himself in the midst of the conflict between the Japanese terrorists and British soldiers, whereupon he met a girl named Code Geass (C2), who has endowed him with the power known as “Geass.” This power provides its owner an opportunity to force any person to accomplish any order. Using this force Lelouch decides to revenge on the murderers of his mother and create the world where his younger blind sister will be able to live successfully. By hiding his face behind a mask and taking the nickname “Zero,” Lelouch decided to lead the gang of terrorists, which later turned into a powerful organization titled “The Black Knights” in order to start the war with the British Empire.
The events of the second season are set in 2018 a.t.b. (1963). The rebellion lead by Zero, called the “Black Rebellion” was suppressed, while Zero himself considered dead. Lelouch Lamperouge is living the life of an ordinary student and as it seems he doesn’t remember his past. Furthermore, he has a brother instead of a sister. The remains of the “Black Knights” are carrying out a special operation, as a result of which Code Geass contacts Lelouch and returns his memory. Later, it turns out that his memory was rewritten by his father in order to catch Code Geass, his sister was kidnapped whereas his brother is an agent, who is ready to kill Lelouch at any time. Despite this circumstance, Lelouch again turns into Zero and continues his fight with the British Empire, and subsequently with the whole world.
The third season of the anime series will be titled “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Resurrection.” The events of the third season will (apparently) take place in a different era, but according to the series’ timeline. The storyline of the third season revolves around a the protagonist named Renya, a 17-year-old boy with a mechanical arm, who thus has an ability to choose between various weapons. Renya will meet with the new heroine named Reifū C.C.” C.C., a young witch, who is in search of a new partner to deal. Lelouch will also appear in the third season. However, his role is unknown at the moment.
On January 6, 2010, Bandai Entertainment has announced the filming of “Code Geass” season 3. On April 22, 2010, the spin-off titled “Code Geass GAIDEN: Boukoku no Akito” has been announced, and it debuted on August 4, 2012. On November 27, 2016, Otakomu confirmed the renewal of “Code Geass” for a third season, recap movies have been announced as well. However, there has been no official announcement of a specific release date for a third season (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Resurrection, “set several years after Zero Requiem, which director Goro Taniguchi says stars a Lelouch who is alive and not an alternate version”).
