“Oooooh, shiny!”

“What? Who? Oh it’s you again, you irksome young inquisitor. Don’t you ever tire of these games?”

“No. What are you hiding, Great Dragon?”

“Nothing.”

“Yes you are. It‘s no use curling your tail over it now. I saw a big stash of something. They were shiny.”

“It’s gold, okay. And no you can’t win it by tricking me with a riddle. This isn’t bloody Middle-earth, you know.”

“That wasn’t gold. Gold doesn’t shine with that intensity. It was more like the faraway diamonds that twinkle in the ebony cloak of the night.”

“You mean the stars.”

“Yes, the blazing pinpricks punctuating the eternal nothing…”

“Please, by the great triple goddess, cease the puerile pubescent poetry before my ears melt.”

“Then admit it, or you get an encore. Admit you’ve got some stars hidden under your great, big green scaly…”

“Ah, so you’ve rumbled me. Yes. These are the stars that next week’s episode of Merlin will be getting.”

“How many?”

“That’s for me to know and you to… erm… not know for now But be assured, I have counted them all and I’ll know if you’ve pilfered any, you suspect young tatterdemalion.”

“It looked like there were loads.”

“There were indeed.”

“It’s a good episode then?”

“It is indeed. One of the best. But I may be biased.”

“Why?”

“Because it has a quite wonderful guest appearance in it from one by whom your present interlocutor is in the habit of referring to by use of the perpendicular pronoun?*”

“Eh?”

‘It is I.”

“Oh. Do you make any sense in it for a change?”

“Not much. I love messing with Merlin’s mind.”

“Well, things don’t sound promising so far…”

“Oi!”

“So why’s it so great?”

“It’s momentous. And epic. And pivotal. It’s a huge episode for Mordred, but more crucial still for Arthur and Merlin. Merlin is caught between a rock and a hard place, and has to make a decision – well a number of decisions, actually, but one in particular – that rips his very soul apart. Not in a magical way, you understand, but Colin Morgan’s quite brilliant acting leaves you in no doubt that Merlin is more conflicted than he’s ever been.”

“Ye gads, it sounds heavy.”

“It is. But it’s also action-packed, magic-packed and laced with humour. Especially when Mordred goes about something entirely the wrong way. The knights have a big involvement. There’s some gratuitous rune vandalism. Someone gets the point. And there’s another prophecy of sorts… though no-one seems quite sure if it’s actually a threat. Be assured, there will be repercussions.”

“What about Guinevere?”

“She’s beginning to become a bit of a revenge widow, but she has her moments.”

“And what’s a Disir?”

“It’s an anagram of Idris.”

“Oh my stars and garters… it’s a Doctor Who crossover!”

“Um… no.”

“Oh well. One more question.”

“Yes?”

“What’s that smell?”

“What smell?”

“That burning smell.”

“Ow! Ow! Ow! That’ll be these bloody stars burning my balls off. Even dragons have their limits of fiery endurance. So if you wouldn’t mind vacating the cave while I get some air to my nether regions, or there’ll be no more baby dragons…”

Merlin “The Disir”” airs on BBC1 on Saturday at 8.15pm.

“She’s beginning to become a bit of a revenge widow, but she has her moments.”

WTF?

I'm guessing he means that Gwen's character is being reduced to just worrying about Arthur dying and making a widow of her in his quest to seek revenge on people. I could be way off the mark though.

That makes sense. Poorly worded, though. It's actually the "she has her moments" comment that rankles me. Sounds like a backhanded compliment.

On Sundays many women become football widows as their husbands attention is focused solely on the NFL and gridiron action. I believe that's what they meant, Gwen takes a backseat to Arthur's never ending quests for revenge.

Ah, that makes way more sense. Thanks, missNST.

Yes your are right MissNST, that is exactly what the comment means. Every episode so far he has either ride out to satisfy some revenge Eposide 1,2 4, in episode 3 he spent the entire episode with Merlin trying to send his father's ghost back to the underworld and now episode 5 he is riding out again for more revenge, this time for Mordred's life,...go figure. Gwen is left behind again as usual. No wonder they have no children!!!! HE IS NEVER HOME!!

Of course, when he IS home, they should be making productive use of that time...

As the writer of the article I can 100% guarantee I am not dissing Gwen. I’ve been a great supporter of Gwen, both in the magazine and on the website (feel free to read my comments about her in the episode 5x01 preview). When I say, "she has her moments" I am referring to this episode only – she has little to do but she has her moments. I don’t think you should over-analyze too much. (If it helps, I think episode six will be a big episode for Gwen – haven’t seen it yet, but she’s in the Next Time trailer at the end of 5x05 very prominently – and I can say no more because the BBC will hunt me down)

Oh wow, Dave. Thanks for coming here to explain things to us. I've been reading your previews from the past episodes and you have sung her praises in those so I shouldn't have been so quick to suspect that you were dissing her. Sorry about that. I was a bit confused by the "revenge widow" bit as I've never heard it used before and it didn't seem like a good thing to be so I thought it was an insult. But now that I know what it means, I totally understand that it wasn't an insult. You were just saying that she's been sidelined again in the episode which is so frustrating for us, Gwen fans, but it's the unfortunate truth. Yes, I've also heard that Gwen will be more prominent in 5x06 so that's good news. I would beg for more details from you but since you've said that the BBC will hunt you down and I don't want to get you into trouble, I'll leave it alone. But do feel free to leave some hints in my inbox if you want. LOL. Thanks again.

Yes, thank you, Dave for taking the time to come here and explain. When I said it felt like a backhanded compliment, it's only because the phrase "he/she has his/her moments" is so often used to describe someone who is normally a pain in the neck but occasionally can be nice.

We do appreciate your clarification. Would be nice if all media personnel were so thoughtful!

Thanks so much for commenting Dave. I think we have just been a little disappointed with the lack of Gwen (and Arthur/Gwen).
