Byakuya is a better 'melee' fighter, but Kariya would have won in the end, as he could simply blow all of Byakuya's blossoms away.

(To note, guys, melee fighting is when the person is using their sealed Zanpakuto, or a melee weapon - wind and Byakuya's Shikai and Bankai don't count for that.)
