\'Agents of SHIELD\': Brett Dalton thinks Grant Ward will seem \'like a new man\' going forward
Marvel\'s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been added to your favorites.
Now that former SHIELD Agent Grant Ward has faced the darkness of his past, actor Brett Dalton says "Marvel\'s Agents of SHIELD" is going to really start exploring his character\'s future.
In Season 2\'s "The Things We Bury," Grant Ward forced his brother, Sen. Christian Ward (Tim DeKay), to confess to abuse he forced Grant to inflict on their youngest brother in their youths. (Ward then seemingly killed his brother, but there\'s surely more to that story than the episode presented.) Though some fans are questioning the sincerity of the confession because it was made under duress, Dalton says what\'s important is Grant took it to heart.
"We can debate whether or not it was an honest confession or a coerced one, but he definitely needed to hear certain words from his brother about that particular event in his life," Dalton tells Zap2it. "I think he heard what he needed to hear. I don\'t know how true or untrue that was, but I do know he needed to hear those words from his brother."
There has also been some debate among fans over whether the flashbacks to the well in Season 1 are accurate depictions of what happened or just Ward\'s subjective recollection of the traumatic experience. Dalton doesn\'t have a clear answer one way or another, though he does note it\'s "obviously a turning point for Ward."

Whereas "Agents of SHIELD" delved into Ward\'s past in Season 1, Dalton promises that Season 2 won\'t get hung up on his character\'s history. Instead, this season will explore who Ward is going to become.
"It\'s really about the future for Ward and what happens next, not what has already happened. I think that returning to the well was so that he can bury the past once and for all," Dalton says. "I got rid of the beard, got rid of everything else in episode 7, and the next time you see him in episode 8 after burying the past, he\'s all dressed in black. I certainly tried to play this -- and I hope that people noticed it as well -- but he seems like a new man."
The new Ward is confident, and Dalton feels his character has met up with the perfect ally for his new lease on life. "There\'s, I think, a type of clarity after confronting that period in his life and moving beyond it. Whitehall\'s all about talking about second chances," he notes.
"Marvel\'s Agents of SHIELD" returns for its final two episodes of the fall at 9 p.m. ET/PT Tuesday, Dec. 2.
