Bloody shocks and eye-gouging twists are on the way in a brand new season of Game of Thrones, according to star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

The 44 year-old Dane, who plays Westeros veteran Jaime Lannister, admits viewers will be gripped and horrified by the forthcoming series, claiming the writers have ‘gone too far this time.’

“This new season is bloodier and more shocking than ever before,” he tells Independent.ie. “That’s pretty much the only thing I can confirm. Viewers won’t be bored, put it that way. You read the script and think, ‘whoa, are they really going to go that far.’ It’s the beauty of the show.

But the actor confesses he’s still not over the brutal murder of on-screen son Joffrey Baratheon (Trinity student Jack Gleeson) and struggled to shoot the new episodes without the Irish star.

“You lose friends on Thrones all the time but I was really sad to see Jack go. He’s a great guy and brought a wonderful energy to the set so it felt strange without him. I really missed him.

“And actually, I was in Sydney last year at a [fan] convention and suddenly a Jaime lookalike came up, and he looked better than I did, with a Joffrey lookalike beside him. Wnd what was scary was it was just after Joffrey had been poisoned and this kid looked exactly like Jack, it was eerie.

“I had to have a picture taken with him and sent it to Jack.”

Despite Thrones creator George R.R. Martin working on the latest instalment in the book series, Coster Waldau believes the medieval epic has just two more seasons left.

“I think that’s what the writers are working towards. Most shows get seven seasons. The interest might start to peter out at that point. So I’d say it’s just two more seasons.”

Meanwhile, fans can catch currently Nikolaj on the big screen in Danish thriller, A Second Chance.

Directed by Suzanne Bier, he delivers a powerful performance as a grieving cop who abducts a baby from drug addict parents after his own child tragically dies.

“It’s a shocking story but I understood why he does what he does. It’s a crazy solution, you can’t bring back a dead baby but he does it because he’s in shock.

“I think everyone can sympathise but also understand and relate, that is the dilemma here. That is why it’s so messed up.

“And you feel for him, you feel for the mother of the baby he abducts, you feel for his wife.”

Living in his native Denmark with wife, former Miss Greenland, Nukaka Motzfeldt and their young daughters, Saffina (14) and Phillipa (11), Coster Waldau couldn’t help thinking of his own family while shooting the harrowing drama.

“It’s obvious that you use whatever you are, you use your experience,” he explains. “There were scenes that were really, really dark and you can’t help but imagine if it was your own kids. You use yourself.”
