Full spoilers for Game of Thrones: Season 6’s premiere, “The Red Woman,” continue below.
Brienne of Tarth has been on the hunt for Sansa Stark for seasons and seasons on Game of Thrones, and Sansa has been in desperate need of a champion for just as long. Finally, right at the moment when it seemed sure that Sansa would be captured by Ramsay Bolton’s men and returned to her tormentor, Game of Thrones delivered its first big victory of Season 6: Brienne swooping in to save the day.

That rescue and Brienne’s subsequent pledge of loyalty to Sansa mark a big turning point for both of their arcs, and actress Sophie Turner promises good things are to come for her character.
“It was awesome knowing that [Sansa] has someone on her side that’s out there to protect her. It’s the first person that’s actually done that since Tyrion,” Turner told me during a recent interview. “It’s a big thing for Sansa to have someone on her side and someone that will do right by her no matter what. It’s a big thing, and there’s more to come.”
Like the rest of Game of Thrones fans, Turner admits she’s been waiting for Sansa to have a huge victory like this “for the past six seasons,” and “finally things are happening.” Even though she’s suffered a lot over the years, Sansa has learned from all of her experiences and, according to Turner, is going to be a very able player in the game of thrones in Season 6.

“Her motivation going forward is revenge on all the people that have done her wrong,” Turner explained. “The fact that she has someone behind her now foreshadows the fact that she’s going to start building a group of people who really listen to her for the first time. It’s important that the first one of them is a woman, and that’s her only gateway into making the men listen to her. It definitely foreshadows good things for her.”
According to Turner, this is “quite a season for revenge.” When asked if some of that revenge will involve some comeuppance for the events of the Red Wedding, Turner said that’s “definitely, definitely” on the horizon.
“She definitely builds up her own allies in this [season],” Turner said of Sansa. “She’s not gathering an army, but it’s basically about her trying to make people listen to her and people realize that she knows the politics of this game and she knows how these things work. She probably has strategies better than a lot of the other people who are trying to fight a war with war, but she actually has the strategies and the tactics. It’s about her trying to make people listen.”
It only helps her cause that Brienne of Tarth is at her side, and Turner said they made a good team. “Brienne is loyal to Sansa, and Sansa’s not going to lose someone who actually wants to help her,” she explained. “She’s not going to push them away at any time. They’re kind of like a duo who are quite powerful in their own right because Brienne has these amazing set of skills and also is such a strong woman and really inspires Sansa to be that person, to stand up in front of her enemies. Sansa knows how to play the game.”
Turner also said that Sansa and Brienne are going to be “pretty much” a package deal in Season 6, which seems to imply that Sansa will also be at Riverrun to meet with the Tullys alongside Brienne and Podrick Payne.
Of Sansa’s other big ally, Littlefinger, Turner said she’s still unsure of his motivations given the fact he was the one who delivered Sansa to the Boltons in Season 5. “I go back and forth with that. On the one hand I think ‘he wouldn’t have done that to her’ and then on the other I’m like, ‘but he’s not a stupid man,” she said. “He knows everything that happens everywhere.’ You wonder what his motives really are. He’s just playing the game for himself right now, I think.”
Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
