They are not actual holidays. I can only answer for the US. I beleive the reason for the five দিন work week goes back to the Christian faith of the founding fathers. Saturday is the Jewish Sabbath. Christians moved their দিন of worship to Sunday, because Christ ressurection occured on the first দিন of the week. (Sunday) I could be wrong, but I think I'm correct. When I was a kid, nothing was open on Sundays.
