Why do they call Q-tips... Q-tips?

I've been sitting here twisting a Q-tip in my ear (ew. :P) and thinking... why are they called that? :|

When they were first manufactured, they called them "Baby Gays". They were hot sellers, so naturally a generic version came about called the "quality tip", and it became shortened through time.
