Ranking the magical elements from 'The Vampire Diaries' and 'The Originals'
Welcome to Julie’s Diary! Every week during the season,
showrunner Julie Plec will add an entry to her diary. From answering burning questions to giving behind-the-scenes stories and more, this is a place for fans to hear directly from Plec about the episode they just watched.
Thanks for watching “This Woman’s Work,” written by Chad Fiveash and James Stoteraux (a.k.a. the Live Lego Tweeters) and directed by our much loved production designer Garreth Stover. This week’s topic is about deadlines. As in, the deadline I have to deliver this blog entry. It’s been a busy week. I just returned from directing a
episode, I’ve been juggling multiple cuts in progress editorially. We are in the process of locking in and delivering the final scripts of the season on both shows, and I’m lending an extra helping hand to the smart and talented
executive producer Caroline Dries as she gets ready to produce her very first pilot. And currently I am on a plane to meet my parents for the weekend, and “I have to write a diary entry” isn’t a legitimate excuse for being late. Feeling a bit under the gun, I reached out to Twitter to help me with this week’s column.
“Dear Twitter,” I asked. “Here’s your chance to ask me anything. I am in deadline panic. The first ten questions (as deemed legitimate, intelligent and non R-rated by me) will be answered in my @EW blog tonight. Hit me up and check our if your question made the cut tonight after the show at ew.com.”
@klaroheart wrote, “What can be expected from this crossover?” Klaroheart means next week’s episodes, in which Stefan makes his way to New Orleans in the present, and Caroline hits up magic-free zone St. James Infirmary in the flash-forward. You can expect some great scenes reminiscent of season 3 Klaus and Stefan moments. A surprising generosity from one Klaus Mikaelson. An awkward moment where Stefan realizes he’s not sure if Klaus knows he and Caroline are a couple, and a really beautiful phone call between Klaus and Caroline. Also a little Easter Egg surprise that will make you ask some big questions about how
s, you can expect Stefan to get sucked into the Mikaelson’s sire line drama. As one of Klaus’s sire line, Stefan finds himself in quite a predicament as Klaus’s life is threatened by the return of the White Oak.
@syliergonz didn’t mince words as they asked the question on everyone’s minds: “Season 8?” Well I sure hope so! I know we have a very large crew and cast of people who really want to be doing what we love on this show next year, so keep your fingers crossed.
@kendravictoria wanted to know “Why does Rayna look like Elena?” Well, Kendra, the answer is total blind, and I do mean blind, coincidence. It wasn’t a resemblance we noticed right away, but once someone pointed it out, it was all we could see. We threw in a couple jokes about it, but truthfully, there is no mythological reason for it.
@EldestDamon seems upset, asking “Why is Damon’s character development falling? He takes one step forward and so many steps back.” Yes, that’s true. I would argue, and you might not agree with me, that the day Damon Salvatore is a perfect angel is the day we should stop making this show. People don’t ever grow up to be perfect, and I’m not sure I’d like that Damon. We love exploring his depth, his vulnerabilities, and his deeply heroic core. But we also love to hate the part of him that’s selfish, stubborn, manipulative and — let’s face it — kind of an asshole. You have to take the bad with the good.
@ManuelI84 asks the question I get a hundred times a day about “Delena’s future??” All I can say is that Damon is committed to being at Elena’s side when she wakes up in however many years it takes, and he’s going to do everything he can to make sure he still believes he’s worthy of her. He will hit a lot of bumps in the road coming up in the next few episodes and will have to make some drastic decisions. Don’t forget, when we started this season, he was lying desiccated in a coffin next to hers.
@AbbieFortune wants to know “When will Steroline reunite in the flash forwards?” The answer is: They will come face to face in episode 719.
are here to stay as long as you’ll have us. Also, if and when
ends, it would be fun to see some of our favorites from Mystic Falls find their way to NOLA.
Sadly I said I’d answer the first 10 questions, but when I refreshed my page I had 500 new mentions, and I lost my place. So I apologize to whoever was next in line. After about a hundred DELENA IS OUR ENDGAME. KLAROLINE IS COMING. STEROLINE. STELENA and BAMON messages, I found the next question from @delenasvoodoo who demanded to know, “Why would you think it’s okay for Bonnie to encourage Damon to cheat on her best friend who sacrificed for her?” Well, voodoo, Elena’s parting words to Damon involved a request for him to “live his life.” The subtext in that was not to be a monk and not to retreat into isolation. But I’ll be honest, I’m not sure he would have ever been with another woman if he hadn’t thought he had just burned his one true love to ash.
And here’s where things started to get testy as Bonnie arrived to discover the remnants of Damon’s one-night stand, and @elessedil_ asked, “Do you think we’re stupid? Why are you trying to show cheating as something good while your audience is mostly teenagers?” Referring back to the last question, we don’t perceive it to be cheating. We believe it to be of questionable merit and slightly skanky, but not cheating. Everyone has their own opinions about sex and commitment in adult relationships. In our mind, Elena gave Damon permission to live his life to the fullest without her in it. Hopefully this won’t be a pattern of how he intends to live it, because both of them deserve better.
And, finally, @whodatf wants to know, “When will you explore Bamon? I’m going very grey waiting.” Bonnie and Damon’s friendship is about to hit some fairly major hurdles. He’s making bad decisions left and right, and he will make one that impacts Bonnie in horrible ways. He will have to work very hard to earn her forgiveness, and they’ll each have to decide how important they are to each other. That’s the best I can tell you for now. I can’t comment on future pairings because my mind changes a lot.
