Edward was seventeen and dying from the Spanish Influenza when Carlisle changed him into a vampire at Edward's mother, Elizabeth's request.

After his transformation, Carlisle took Edward under his wing and cared for him until Edward went off on his own for a few years.

Ever since then, after also changing his wife Esme, Carlisle had occasionally bitten a dying teenager and took them into his family :)
