That was before all the minor characters became part of the show. They were originally guest stars for the first season and halfway through the second. They didn't have the details of the characters down early on so not all of it is succinct.
I've seen The Office quite a few times and I don't think she was ever referred to as an accountant. In the beginning, I don't think it was ever mentioned what she did there.

Um, yes they did, in the first season the episode "The Alliance" when Michael is পাঠ করা the message from Jim on her b-day card. Also, it does say what she is now as opposed to what she was in reference to season 4's box set; Dwight's org chart.
Snozdoodle is right. It was in the first season before the minor characters became আরো major. I think Jim wrote on her birthday card, "Hey, Meredith, I hear you're turning 42(?) but you're an accountant. Why don't আপনি just অর্থহীন the numbers?"
