It was called "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" EP Dan Goor Talks আরো Holt's Hubby & Kyra Sedgwick In Season 2 - thebacklot.com
Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
The toughest thing a successful first season series has going into year 2 is not hitting the sophomore slump.
, which follows the antics of a group of Brooklyn detectives led by Andy Samberg, came out of the gate a year ago and wasted no time in finding its comedic footing. Earlier this year, it won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy Series and Samberg won Best Actor in a Comedy Series.
) and Dan Goor, did another thing really well. It created a gay character that wasn’t a stereotype, wasn’t the butt of jokes, wasn’t sexless and wasn’t created as an accessory to the straight characters. Captain Ray Holt is everything
those things, and actor Andre Braugher landed an Emmy nomination for the role.
We caught up with co-creator and co-executive producer Dan Goor at Fox’s Fall Eco-Casino party earlier this week and asked him what we can expect for our favorite gay police Captain in the new episodes later this month. Also, whether we’ll be seeing his on-screen husband, Kevin Cozner, again.
“Marc Evan Jackson is coming back for another episode, which they have shot,” Goor told us. “He’s great and he’s very funny in the episode. The episode itself doesn’t center on their relationship [but] it’s back at their house.” Jackson returns in the fifth episode of the new season but don’t be surprised if he shows up again later in the season. “We are such huge fans of [Jackson] and of their relationship and we haven’t really yet done another major relationship story of theirs this season so we need to do that.”
Last season’s ‘The Party’ episode introduced Marc Evan Jackson as Holt’s husband.

Asked if he feels like Braugher’s Captain Holt is a groundbreaking character, Goor smiled and replied, ‘I don’t want to toot our own horn in any way, but I do kinda feel like it’s groundbreaking. Our intention wasn’t to be groundbreaking, but our intention was to portray a gay character where that is a secondary aspect of his personality. It’s a trait insofar as being heterosexual is a trait. He has a husband as opposed to a wife.” Goor also gave a lot of credit for the role to Braugher himself. “That’s a huge testament to Andre, who I think is so fantastic in that part and plays it in such a grounded way.”
With so many gay characters and storylines on television these days, Goor said he and the creative team are very aware of Holt’s place in the mainstream series and the fact that there was barely a ripple of controversy when the show premiered last year. “It’s not lost on us at all,” he said, “and that’s a really wonderful thing. Hopefully that’s an indicator that we’re making some progress in this area as a country.”
As established in the show’s pilot episode, Holt had just been promoted to Captain when he joined the 99 and Samberg’s Peralta wondered why his new boss hadn’t ascended to that position sooner in his long career. Holt explained that it was because times had changed and being an out cop or detective was no longer seen as a negative. Goor admitted they intend to do stories about Holt’s sexuality, but they may have organically made it tougher for themselves. “The difficult thing for us is that [Holt\'s] squad by design thinks it’s no big deal, so as a result it makes it a little bit more difficult to come up with storylines that involve the fact of his sexuality– because it’s not a moment of conflict.”
Last season’s “Old School” episode was one that did tackle Holt’s sexuality head on since “an outsider comes in and has a reaction to it.” Goor added, however, “since we did ‘Old School’ it’s hard to do another episode like ‘Old School.’ That said, we can portray Holt’s domestic relationship in a comic but normative way as we did in ‘The Party’ and that’s what we plan to continue doing.”
Another perk to being a hot show going into a second season? Big names want to guest star. Case in point, Kyra Sedgwick (
) guest-stars in the second episode of the season, entitled “Dark Milk.” Goor explained the episode title first of all. “It’s named after a fictitious hot chocolate shop in Brooklyn [and] Kyra Sedgwick’s character comes in and is the nemesis to Andre’s character. They go back 25 years and we see the genesis of their enmity and it’s hilarious.” Goor revealed there will be a flashback in the episode and it was actually pitched by Sedgwick herself. And, yes, we’ll once again see Holt with his 80s pornstache and much more hair.
Who else might we meet in the new season? Holt’s mother. We’ve only seen Holt talk to his mother on the phone and one thing we know is that she’s a judge since Holt, of course, doesn’t refer to her as ‘Mom’ but, instead, ‘your honor.’ Goor wouldn’t share who he has in mind to play the role (I suggested CCH Pounder or Alfre Woodard to him), but he did say, “I want to meet ‘your honor’ but I don’t think she’d have a problem with his sexuality.”
‘s second season kicks off in its new Sunday on September 28th on Fox.
