This is a topic I've seen lately on the local news a lot. Wondering what other people think about it.

I'm not an American but I'm just wondering why they would be if their first language isn't even English?

^Because America doesn't have an official language. It doesn't matter what they speak. They're also our territory, irregardless of their language.

Personally, I'm not sure if they should be, mainly because I've heard that Puerto Rico doesn't want to be a state, and I've heard that they do. I think if they choose to be a state, they should have that option, but I don't think we should force them to be a state just because they're technically our territory.

Sure, since they voted in favor for it this time around. I don't really know any downsides to it, but I haven't read about the topic in about 5 years.

It's Puerto Rico's right to self-determine. If they voted for statehood, they should be welcomed with open arms. If they voted for independence, we should cut them loose. Even if they voted to remain just a territory, than that's what they want. But it's not our part as a territorial power to keep them prisoner. To refuse them independence (if they wanted it) or to refuse them representation (what they voted on with the statehood) would be to repeat history - except we'd be Great Britain.

Sure, they should become part of us if there's a majority of Puerto Rico.
I'm even in favor of any state already within the US seceding from the union if there's a majority opinion within that state to do so (for instance factions within Alaska and Texas sometimes threaten that). I don't get why people have so much emotion and anger towards secession -- people should fit in with or break away from whatever culture they want to in order to feel most comfortable. I don't think America should become an empire inflicting their power on everyone around the world.
