I know a lot of whites are gonna get salty about this.
tough choice.
I never saw Olaf's Frozen Adventure so I'm just gonna pick Coco (I love Coco so that's okay)
It's a story about a boy who wants to become a musician, against the wishes of his family, all of it revolving around the Day of the Dead - why does it have to be a boy? Why does he need to have the exact same motive - music - right down to the instrument? Why couldn't they pick a different holiday?
Come on, you know if it had been any other studio doing a film with this many thematic elements in common with another animated movie they'd (rightfully) be taking shit for it - in fact, this is exactly what happened with Dreamworks and Antz, Shark Tale, Madagascar, Flushed Away, Madagascar, Turbo, etc., which were definite Pixar ripoffs even though their plots were tweaked basically to the same degree that Coco's is relative to The Book of Life.
Themes about death and rememberance has been a thing for Disney forever like Lion King and Brother Bear and Big Hero 6
One of the heroes in Book of Life is part of a love triangle, dies, fights a main villain who has an army, and two spirits have a bet on which boy is going to end up with the girl
The hero in Coco wants to be like his hero and thinks his hero is his great great grandfather, there is no love interest, he doesn't die at all, he runs away from home, is cursed, ends up at the land of the dead, meets a man who wants to cross over, there's no wise cracking spirit, there's more songs, the main villain is a murderer but doesn't have an army and doesn't try to destroy villages, and there's no spirits making bets
You're looking at a movie that takes place on the day of the dead with a main character who wants to play music and you're automatically thinking they're one and the same. that's like saying all christmas movies are the same
Cool except it's Pixar that did the creative work, and that really isn't a common theme of theirs. And it's not that it's just one or two similarities, otherwise I'd be saying Coco's also a ripoff of all the movies you just listed. Added up, there's just too much in common with another animated movie - especially for a studio that gets lauded all the time for being so much smarter and more inventive than all the others.
"The hero in Coco wants to be like his hero and thinks his hero is his great great grandfather, there is no love interest, he doesn't die at all, he runs away from home, is cursed, ends up at the land of the dead, meets a man who wants to cross over, there's no wise cracking spirit, there's more songs, the main villain is a murderer but doesn't have an army and doesn't try to destroy villages, and there's no spirits making bets"
Wow, it's almost like they don't need to share every last detail in order to for one to clearly borrow so heavily from the other one. If you copy off someone's paper but change some of the wording to throw off your teacher, it's still plagiarism. They're too similar where it matters. Other movies are deemed ripoffs for doing this - Antz and A Bug's Life weren't exactly the same either. But because it's Pixar, everyone swoons.
"that's like saying all christmas movies are the same"
It really isn't. Skipping the issue of why the Day of the Dead seems to be the only Mexican holiday anyone thinks is marketable, Pixar could have given us a Day of the Dead story about a hero - or heroine even, god forbid - who had different ambitions, skills, conflicts, than the kid in the other Day of the Dead movie, and they didn't; end of.
except it kinda does. it's a movie about the day of the dead with the main character being a musician. once again, it's like saying Sleeping Beauty is a ripoff of Snow White because they both sing in a forest, live in a cottage in the woods, and both get cursed into a sleep and need their true loves to kiss them.
also maybe the reason people fawn over A Bug's Life more is because Antz was really not that good
Also, don't think I forgot when Trump got elected and you were all "haha let us have him to fix our country?" because you were pressed about Muslims living in Spain with you.
