Why was Frodo not wearing the Mithril at the time he was stung দ্বারা Shelob, the giant spider?

It was chain link armor so there is naturaly small holes in it. It was made to stop slashing attacks and some large stabbing attacks, not something as needle like as a spider's stinger. It would have also been useless if the troll was weilding a club.
