As wonderful as that relationship managed to be at times, it constantly caused problems. Yeah, we all wish love was like that. So, you can have a relationship like that if you don't date an alien.

I love the thrill of dating an alien but I would rather have a relationship like Maria and Michael, fav couple!

I would love to be able to see into my lover's soul, dude (and vice versa)...despite some very embarrassing things in my past (ha). Plus, I dunno, although I wouldn't like being in danger, I would love to be involved in something for the greater good like they are.
