I guess either's possible, but I think that maybe this could have happened - or perhaps Zira left him.

Maybe Zira's mate was the king of the pride that she and all the other outlanders came from? In which case maybe he did die, or maybe there was some other reason why they left him or he exiled them, causing them to eventually find Scar and join him.

Just a thought!
