I think that she loved the captain he just didn't love her.....

The assumption everyone makes that the Baroness is a conniving witch has always bothered me. She may not have been as sweet and kind as Maria but i wholeheartedly believe that she was in love with the Captain and that letting him go really tore her apart :(

I don't think she was truly "in love" with him, and think it could have been his money and his status that drew her in. She did seem to honestly respect him though. And the fact that she wanted him to be happy (with Maria) suggested that she really wasn't the selfish- shallow type people expect her to be.

She was in no way in it for the money. She genuinely loved him or, really, she would have tried harder to keep him for herself. She didn't want to be in a marriage where her husband wasn't in love with him. Look at her eyes when she is saying goodbye to him. It tore her apart to leave him. She isn't a conniving witch, and if she had married him, she would have eventually learned to love the children because I don't believe the Captain would have sent them to boarding school. Plus, she was already a millionaire, as Max states so modestly, when she gets engaged to him.

She would not have been it it for the money think how much she already has so she doesn't need his too, If she didn't love the Captain herself then she wouldn't have been able to stand aside when Maria came back as she already new there was love between them and let the Captain be happy with Maria as she new it's what he wanted as soon as came back from the abbey.

I think she loved him...why would she need his money? She's a baroness....
