Because, they were in a আগুন nation territory. There was a firenation village up the hill, so they acted like normal অবতার people in order not to be seen.

Well, like the other answers, not only was there a আগুন nation village up the hill, but this was Sokka's task, not Toph অথবা Aang's. Despite the fact of the possible danger of being revealed to the আগুন nation, Sokka most likely wanted to complete the task on his own, without help from the others.

I am sort of revising what was ব্যক্ত about the territory. They were in firebender territory and it would have been a pretty dumb idea to do earthbending in the territory in case someone in the আগুন nation army saw them. The group also didn't know that Sokka's master knew who they were already and that he didn't mind. Either way, it was mostly because it was আগুন nation territory.
