Hello everyone! I'm Veronica (a.k.a. ApplesauceDoctr :D), and hey, it's been a little while since I've written an article. It feels good to get back into the spirit of writing. :D
So, what have I today? As আপনি can see, I'll be analyzing the song "Reflection" from Disney's Mulan. I made a lyric video for it about a week পূর্বে and realized just how deep the song is! However, in this analysis, I'll also be taking a look at the extended version of the song. It shows a different side of মুলান that...well, you'll see soon enough.

Alright then! Let's take a listen to Reflection!

Movie Version

Look at me
I will never pass for a perfect bride
অথবা a perfect daughter
Can it be
I'm not meant to play this part?

From this, we can see that মুলান knows that she can't be what society expects her to be - that perfect চীনামাটির বাসন doll. It's just not going to happen, and as a result, she প্রশ্ন herself. If she's not that perfect bride অথবা daughter, then what is she? Who is she supposed to be?

Now I see
That if I were truly to be myself
I would break my family's heart

This excerpt here makes me think of Elsa. And Hercules. All of these characters want to just be themselves and fit in, but it's not that easy. For Mulan, she wants to be herself, but not if it means disappointing her family. She truly loves and respects them and is willing to try to be what society expects of her in order to maintain a good family image. As we've discussed, though, she can't do this, thus bringing us to the chorus:

Who is that girl I see
Staring straight back at me?
Why is my reflection
Someone I don't know?

For some reason, I never really understood what মুলান meant দ্বারা this, and here I am right now feeling like a complete dunce. xD
Whenever মুলান sees her reflection, she sees what she's trying to be - the "perfect চীনামাটির বাসন doll". আপনি know this দ্বারা now. But she knows that's not who she is. She wants to be her true self while at the same time making her family proud. Of course, she feels that she can't be herself without giving the Fa family a bad name.

Somehow I cannot hide
Who I am, though I've tried
When will my reflection show
Who I am
Inside?

(That last line is repeated, দ্বারা the way. ;D)
This basically re-establishes what she's already been saying. She hides her true self to try and fit society's expectations, yada yada. She awaits the day, if indeed there is a day, when she can be herself and not worry about dishonoring the family.

I'll bet (not really) you're thinking, "Wow, that's it? Short song." Indeed. It's a gorgeous song, but rather short. We'll now take a look at the extended version of the song. Why was the song trimmed? Let's find out!

Extended Version

Who is that perfect bride?
It's not me, though I've tried
When will my reflection show
Who I am
Inside?

The looking-into-the-mirrors bit should look familiar, as does this excerpt entirely. The only real way this contrasts with the পূর্ববর্তি excerpt I showed is that instead of her admitting to hiding herself, here, it's আরো directly related to what just happened in the movie *cough cough Matchmaker cough*.
The পরবর্তি excerpt is where the contrast comes in.

How I pray
That a time will come, I can free myself
From their expectations

আপনি know how the movie version mainly focuses on her wanting to please her family? I mean, yeah, she does want to be accepted as herself, but only if she can do so in an "honorable" way.
That gets thrown off a bit here. This suggests that she wants to be devoid from society's expectations altogether in order to live the life she wants. Let's continue on to see where I'm going with this.

On that day
I'll discover someway to be myself
And to make my family proud

Wait, haven't we gone over this already? Yep, we sure have! No need to talk this over again. It's the next stanza we want to take a look at.

They want a docile lamb
No one knows who I am
Must there be a secret me
I'm forced to hide?

Alright, let's see. She's saying that society is basically like this: We don't know who আপনি are, and frankly, we don't care. But we expect আপনি to be perfect. Got that? For someone they hardly know, society's putting a huge weight on Mulan's shoulders, and she's not happy about this. From that last line, she doesn't seem too satisfied with being "forced to hide" herself.
This is the part that makes this extended version of the song seem questionable in respect to what we actually saw in the movie. It makes মুলান seem a bit আরো selfish. Sure, she brings up wanting to make her family proud, but the extended song primarily focuses on how she feels with these expectations. She's had it. She just wants to come right out and be herself without the tension of fitting into the role of the "docile lamb".

Must I pretend that I'm
Someone else for all time?
When will my reflection show
Who I am
Inside?

This excerpt makes my point much আরো clear. What makes the extended version and movie version similar is the fact that মুলান obviously wants to be herself. However, in the movie version, she seems mostly disappointed that her efforts to fit in don't work, and she hopes that she'll be able to make her family proud someday. Here, though, মুলান seems তিক্ত about the fact that society has set these expectations on her. She's sick and tired of pretending to be someone she's not.

So, let's quickly compare and contrast the two. :D

Both Versions:
- মুলান wants to be herself
- মুলান wants to make her family proud

Extended Version:
- Emphasis on wanting personal freedom from society's wishes
- তিক্ত about these aforementioned wishes
- তিক্ত about hiding herself

Final Cut:
- Mostly just emphasis on her desire to be herself; no detectable bitterness

And there আপনি have it! I hope আপনি enjoyed পাঠ করা this, as I had a ton of fun লেখা it. :) আপনি may want to check out my link song analysis of "If আপনি Can Dream" from a while back.
I'll bet that আপনি either a) are going to listen to the extended song right now অথবা b) already have, haha. :D
Well, that about wraps things up! Thanks so much for reading! Adios!

Nightfall had come, but Shang and John still weren't back yet. "I'm getting worried." মুলান said. "John sometimes likes to explore the different scenes at night. He probably took Shang with him." Pocahontas reassured. মুলান thought for a minute. "You're right, Pocahontas. I'm sure if it becomes too late for them to come back, they'll set up camp and come back in the morning." she stated. Merida, however, got really nervous. *What if something happened to them?* she asked herself. Pocahontas stared at her as if she were a book.

"Merida, I know those boys. I'm sure nothing happened to them." she...

Time was nearing for the trip. While Pocahontas and John were preparing for the arrivals, Mulan, Shang and Merida were busy packing. Shang was প্রদত্ত time since China was still in good shape. Elanor saw the letter before Merida had a chance to tell her, but with her blessing, she could go on the trip. Pocahontas, Nakoma, and the rest of the women gathered খাবার for the দিন they arrived. "The girls will be fine." Fergus reassured Merida before she left. Everything was falling into place.

Merida hurried to her room and grabbed her bow. She was competing in a family friendly archery match. Why this occasion? Because it was her birthday! Princess Merida of the Dunbroch clan was finally turning 18! "Archers to your marks!" King Fergus called out. Merida excitedly ran to her marking point. (A/N: If আপনি read the first chapter, you'll know a বছর had passed. Also, I forgot how to spell Dunbroch, so tell me if I spelled it wrong. :P)

Merida got out her অনুষ্ঠান- অ্যারো as fast as she could and placed it inside her bow. Since she was the birthday girl, she was first up, no surprise. Because of...

I don't know if this has been discussed before. I was পাঠ করা Internet Movie Database's message board about whether অথবা not Belle has any বন্ধু in the village. One of the posters think that the triplets are there setting up for Belle and not Gaston due to the reactions prior to Gaston প্রদর্শিত হচ্ছে up.

Since earlier on in the scene (I assume on the DVD) Triplet 2 is whispering to Triplet either 1 অথবা 3rd triplet. That triplet covers their mouth like they;re gasping. When Gaston arrives for some reason they're all shocked. So why would they be shocked if they were setting up for Gaston?

There's also why were the triplets upset that Belle didn't accept Gaston's proposal? Shouldn't they have instead be relieved?

I প্রণয় how hardworking she is and I প্রণয় how she doesn't take shiz from ANYONE, not even from a prince. -BB2010

Her determination. And I would প্রণয় to taste one of her dishes. -Swanpride

Probably just her perseverance. -wavesurf

Probably that she's allowed to have both a warm doting side as well as a take-no-crap one. It's a nice mixture. I also প্রণয় that her whole reason for working so hard is to fulfill James' dream of owning a restaurant. She is truly a family girl and has a lot of প্রণয় for her parents, and her loyalty to her dad is so touching. -AudreyFreak

Hi, y'all! Hope your week is going well! I want to point out one quick thing before we get into this article. I know some of the STUFF in the live-action is different, from the characters and their names to certain parts of the story, so I might actually be all over the place as I talk about the article. Just a fair warning. Now, why don't we get into it?

The characters:

Mulan:

You know what? I'm just going to talk about both versions in one piece for a second. They're both fearless, headstrong, loyal, and badass. I knew the original version was all those things, but see how the live-action version...

Second: Here is my personal break-down analysis based on knowledge of Arab/Muslim culture compared to the ডিজনি আলাদীন film.

The majority of Princess Jasmine's numerous flaws stem from the fact that she is completely inaccurate and offensive to her culture. From the clothes she wears to the way she speaks, জুঁই does not represent Arab অথবা Muslim women at all but rather a disgraceful woman in their culture. Unfortunately, Jasmine...
