they have placed their own twist on the classic tale and so far it has worked. can't wait to see how the relationship between authur and merlin develops. it is a great show

I think that the twist is really good but I think they could have done better on the first show.

I love em all too, but I was hooked on the whole show after five minutes of this ep, and it's very dear to my heart!

Hands down the worst episode of the show. It really was not great. However, I guess it was good enough to get me to watch the next episodes, and then I got hooked, so I suppose it did its job.

The First Ever Episode, As In S01E01.

I`m actually going to share my story about how I got hooked on Merlin for this. In 2008, my parents and I went to Oregon to see my grandma. On the front page of the TV guide, there was a picture of the Merlin cast: I looked inside at the stuff on the show and asked if I could tape the first two episodes to watch. Then, when I watched them the next day, I watched the second episode of the first season first. Realizing my mistake afterwards, I got to have a good laugh ^_^.

Sounds fun, the second episode wasn't very good though.

I never actually understood what "Pilot episode" is, is it some kind of special episode?

If I remember right, a "test pilot" episode is a term used in the early days of television and borrowed from the Aviation Industry to test whether a proposed television series might be profitable and enjoyed by viewers. This may or may not be the same as the First Episode of a Series which has the cast set for the entire production run. Originally, the test pilot episode was never broadcast but screened in front of the producers and often there was a different cast(Gene Roddenberry gave a discussion about it when he was discussing how he sold the "Star Trek" idea as a Space Western to producers at DesiLu) but it showed enough of the proposed show to give an idea whether it was worth producing; nowadays, the Pilot is broadcast and the word Test is removed.

The pilot is what got me hooked on the show. Compared to other show pilots that are generally really slow, Merlin's pilot was quite fast paced. I love the pilot. It's one of my favorite episodes.
